Good temp unit that isn't crazy expensive.

You could probably just make your own....why pay the $159 or up to $600 for a Fish Hawk if all you want is the water temp? Get yourself a quality thermometer (like one for a swimming pool) a 4 oz. lead weight and nylon string, sharpie marker to mark 10' intervals and have at it.

That would be great if it were accurate, but bringing the thermometer back up will change the reading

This one doesn't have any cables; you attach it to your line and send it down. It automatically records temps every 5 feet. In another mode, it can tell the depth your lure is running when trolling, if you clip it on just above your lure.

Don't have one, yet. Watch the video, here:

(EDIT: this may be the one DonPursch was talking about above

I have used one called Clinefinder for several years. The cord is marked every two feet. Nice LED read out. Great for finding thermocline when rowtrolling.

I had a Fishhawk for years and eventually sold it.
I can generally find a thermocline with my depthfinder. if I mark bait or fish below the thermocline I know there is enough oxygen.
If I wanted a complete temperature profile (usually not ) I could use my Aqua Vu camera which would give temperature down to the length of the cable which i believe is 50 feet
