I'm heading up to the Cass Lake area this weekend, anyone got any recent reports?

We had a group of 3 boats that fished Cass lake and surrounding lakes from 9/12-18. For 2 of the three boats, me included, it was our first trip to the area. Two of our three rigs stayed in the cass system all week (cass, pike bay, andrusia, kitchi) and the other fished leech, bimidji, plant, mantrap, etc.

Long story short our fishing on Cass fit the bill as to what I had read about before arrival, She's a clear body of water, and fish respond/flare when approaching the boat. We moved fish everyday but our weather and low sky days were the most "productive." In a week we boated a 47" (first two hours of the trip) and a handful of shorties, but, what kept us there was the quality of fish we brought to the boat. I'd guess we lost 5-8 fish that ranged low to mid 40's that just plain came unpinned and had somewhere around 70 encounters, maybe a few more, some of which i suspect were repeat customers.

That said, when the windows would open we had opportunities and we were able to get some fish to convert from neutral to at least closing down on a lure and taking a shot/nipping at the lure. I had an evening shot at a very solid 50+ that got steel but not enough to pin her...

The guys that fished area lakes did better in the catch dept. 47.25, 46, 45, 43, and some shorties. Cass had a fair amount of pressure on the lake as we arrived during the frank schneider memorial and transitioned into the MWC based on cass lake.

If you're looking for more info let me know or PM me... our key was finding perch and playing the wind. In talking with a few perch jerkers they had muskies chasing their hooked perch. Matter of fact a guy caught a 51" on a perch. We had them going on pretty much everything, bucktails, shallow invaders, suicks, posiden, and top water.

Water temps on Cass were low 60's, around that 62* depending on how cold our evenings got.

If you are not opposed to catching a few perch I would suggest packing a light rod and a few 1/16 up to 1/4oz jigs. We did stop on occasion to set the hook a few times. Perch up to 13.5" are fun to catch.

Good luck
