Posts: 238 | I've been storing my deer tails in 2 drawers (about 18" x 18" x 6"); 1 drawer with purchased colored tails and the other with purchased black tails and my own white tails. For my white tails after skinning the deer, I split the tails, lay them skin side up and sprinkle borax on them and once they're dry I put them in the drawer. Well, anyway, I just discovered mice had eaten ALL the hide that holds the hair in place for all my black tails... probably 5 or 6 of them. It's just a big pile of hair now -close to impossible to use. That sucks! The mice must not like borax though because they didn't touch the dozen or so white tails in the same drawer. Hmmm I'd better check out my drawer of colored tails...

hint...mice hate steel wool. they will not chew through it (who would?) cover any openings where the little creatures can come in and your golden.

Posts: 1084 Location: Aurora | If the hair is still in good shape, get a magnum hair stacker (like the one in the middle) or make one and start makin tails! Edited by Sidejack 3/21/2015 4:23 PM Attachments ---------------- GT24.jpg (31KB - 274 downloads)

Posts: 1144 Location: Minnesota. | I'm a fly tier in another hobby. We have expensive natural stuff that needs guarding against. For feather safe-keeping it's strongly recommended to buy a dog flea collar and cut it into 2" pcs. and store in the plastic bags you keep the feathers (hackle) in. It kills all the tiny "mites" htat eat feathers. Mice, another story, maybe?? Might give it a try. But I'd seriously also consider a sealed, air-tight container. Please excuse the obvious there. I feel for you. That sucks man. Jeremy.

Posts: 2269 Location: SE, WI. | Dave: where do you store your tails? Basement? Garage? if it's in the basement, you have some worst problems:( Dryer sheets detour rodents . I put dryer sheets in my boat storage units. try using those where you store tails. JD

Posts: 42 Location: Madison, WI | I guess that means any lures you make for me this year will not have black hair. Hope the muskies are partial to white lures this year. Mark
