I'm headed to the Cabelas for my area on Tuesday. I have been searching on the Internet for the past month trying to find a good reel that won't break the bank. I have looked at Revo's, Calcutta and Cardiff. I want a reel that will be able to crank up double tens on occasion and won't burn up doing it. My limit is 300 (the less I spend on the reel the more goes into baits) but I would like stay under any recommendations for a long lasting reel. Ps. I'm a lefty

yeah i'd get a toro winch if it fits in your hand. Otherwise a lexa 400P or Calcutta.

I would not recommend a winch for an all around wheel. Get one that takes up around 25" IPT. And get a durable one as well. Look online you should find a way better deal that at cabellas.

I think a NACL 60 5.4 is about the best all around reel out there if you like low profile reels. Great for anything and will pull 10s no prob.

Revo Toro NaCl 51. Really great reel. Most retailers are getting 300 bucks for them, but you can pick up a brand new one on ebay right now for 220 bucks an Free Shipping! That would be a 300 dollar reel with 80 bucks left for lures!

What about the Shimano Cardiff are they enough to hold up to abuse of musky fishing or should they be left for the bass guys.?

Given your budget, I think the best choice for a new reel would be a Calcutta 401B - versatile, outstanding quality and built like a tank. Re. the Cardiff, save your money. It's just not a very good reel.

While at Cabela's be sure to check the bargain cave. You never know what you'll find there.

The Cardiff is an OK reel but you disqualified it when you wrote that you wanted to throw double 10s.

Do they still make the Calcutta 401b I've looked everywhere on the Internet and it seems they are either hiding or non-existant.

I don't think there are a 401B.

Get a 401D or a Toro Nacl.

301D on ebay new for 289 incl. ship. 300's holds enough line. smooth reels and hold up better than revo's. worth the extra 50 imo.

EBay is great but I'm from Canada and that $289 American turns into 350 Canadian very quickly

How are the lexa 400's for musky they have a disengaging level wind which isn't the greatest but are they still enough to cast double 10's.

If you want a durable reel and won't break down throwing 10's unfortunately you get what you pay for.
You may need to go the used route.

You should be able to get a 401d for $300. Good all around reel that can hold up to 10's.

I've checked the Canadian websites that sell the Calcutta 401d and the cheapest I've found is $450.

Not sure if they offer the 5.1 gear in left hand retrieve, but that reel would work fine for what you want to do.

You can find Shimano Calcutta 400B Reels for ~$260. Though these are now discontinued, these 400B's are real workhorses and would give you decades of use.

Ordered one from this site last week. Received it a few days ago. It ends up being ~$215 after shipping! Hard to beat that price for a brand new reel.
