Does anyone use a group 31 starting battery with a 1760? The battery compartment in the back is only 12" wide and a group 31 is 13" wide. Before I go that route, I wanted to make sure the battery would fit.

When I got my rig we up graded from the nornal 24 series to the 27 series which is 12" long. I do have 31s for the trolling motor. My starting battery is a Northern 27 Ev-HD. I run lots of stuff and the 27 has worked fine for what I do. The best battery advice I have ever gotten came when I called the technical hot line at Northern Batteries. Google it. The guy really new his stuff and what all the different letters meant and what type of applications they were meant for. I was amazed how specific batteries have become to the applications. Oh by the way if you look on Northerns web page you will see they make many of the big name ones. My 27 required a different tray and I have to tip it on it's side to get it in the compartment if that helps. I would call northern and tell them what you are all doing and you may determine a 31 isn't needed for what you are doing.

I hope this helps answer your question.

Have a nice night.

I ran a Group 27 Dual Purpose in my Tuffy 1890DS, after the original Group 24 cranking only battery would not get me through a whole day of a walleye tournament with sonars and livewell running. That battery was an Intestate battery, and worked great, both starting the 200HP Optimax, and running my electronics all day long.

FYI, Northern is a just wholesaler and retailer of batteries. They do not manufacture batteries, theirs or any other brand. There are only a few manufacturers of batteries in the US. Johnson Controls is the largest, and hey produce several brands.

Probably they don't know either. I wouldn't hold that against them. Northern brand batteries are as good as any.

Ditto - what Shep said..

Re. Northern Battery - I've known the Donskey's (owners) for a long time. They are salt of the earth fisherman too, and customer satisfaction is their primary business motto.

Have fun!
