On my post about favorite jerk bait set up, I noticed a lot of guys using longer rods.
My question is this:
Do you use the longer rod because your boat sits high off the water or do you like the longer rod for some other reason? I would think the longer rod would be hitting the water all day.

it takes some adjusting but I prefer using a 7' st-croix rod. I also use a 6" heavy jerkbait rod and that one is easier if you are fishing from a boat. In the boats that we use, you stand closer to the water surface so the shorter rod is better to prevent the rodtip from hitting the water. It can be done with a 7' rod as well, it just takes a little bit of practise. I like the longer rod for playing the fish. It's easier that way.

I like my Avid 6'9" Hvy for most jerks. For my Muskie Treat I've found that a med 6'6" is the ticket. But for jerko's a med 7' avid really brings them to life. I guess it really depends on your height, the action of the rod and type of bait. I've heard of people using 7'6"+ rods for jerks, and for a few like Phantoms and Suicks I've had luck with a 7'6", but I still prefer my 6'9".

I just got an Avid 7'6" Hvy that I'll be trying with jerks this summer. I'll keep you posted.

I use St. Croixs newer(post 97 I beleive) premier 7'6"(the older one is a good bucktail rod, but a bit slow or limber for jerks) for all of my jerkbait applications(when fishing from a boat that is). I'm 6'3" and really like the action and length for my Reef hawgs and Bobbies. I'm not sure that the 7'6" was built for anything else(aside from some heavier cranking and bulldawgin')!!!!

Ralph it depends on where I am fishing on my boat. If I am in the back I like a 7ft rod, fishing from the front I just like the 8ft Lamiglass. When fishing from the front I like the longer rod because I can work the bait easer with a longer rod. At times it will hit the water but I usually work the rod off to one side or another making the bait change directions some during the retreve, with a shorter rod I have to move the rod more to change directions. Just a personal preference for that rod I guess.

I use an 8 foot allstar. The rod does not hit the water because you need to move it less. With a short rod you are working harder to get the same action. With a little practice the long rod will equal less fatigue, better hook-set, and a more forgiving way to fight a fish with superbraid line...BR

Looks like I might have to give the longer rod a try, especially with glide baits that you have to really work like suicks and sledges.

Thanks for the input:)

I think longer rods are the ticket. I personally use 7' and 7'6" and 8'.
i think the longer rod has better hook setting power and if it has a fast action tip. The longer rod maintains more pressure on the fish resulting in less slack.

I purchased a 6'3" rod for jerkin' so it wouldn't hit the water. However, I rarely use it because you have to work so hard. Some day, I'll get rid of it for a longer rod.

Why would hitting the water be so bad anyways?
But seriously, with about 30 minutes of getting used to, one can use a rod of great length to work just about anything, just a different motion to get the same results, WITHOUT touching the water. I agree with others, it takes less movement to do the same thing, either casting or twitching/jerking/working a bait.....easier on the back and shoulders, as well as the wrist once you get the right cadence/action down for that particular bait.
BUT, it is kind of hard to find a rod with a tip powerful enough for the larger baits, but if you find one....

I've tried a lot of different rod lengths for jerkbaits and I seem to really like rods between 6'9 and 7'0. Currently I use a 6'9 Aurora Steve Worrall model and really like it.
