While there's a forum for custom baits, there's nothing for custom rods, so I guess I'll post this here. My brother in-law recently acquired some rod building equipment and I'm thinking of trying my hand at rod building, but I clearly have no idea where to start. I've spent some time at mudhole.com but most everything there references stuff other then musky rods. So the question is, where do I go to find information about guide sizing, the number of guides, guide placement, and everything else that goes into building a musky rod?

If you have questions, call Mudhole. Great guys to work with and they will be happy to answer questions, help with guide sizing, make sure everything fits, etc. I would also think a call to thorne bros would be good as well esp since the build muskie specific rods. In my experience folks that build rods are happy to help and excited that you're interested in building rods.

There are a lot of rod building forums to check out there. Jeremy at Tuscarora Tackle would be a good dude to ask as well.

rodbuilding.org is a great site to find a ton of rod building info. Also you could shoot me a pm and I will do what I can to help get you headed in the right direction. I've been building rods for about 14 years now...

Here's my 2 cents:

1. Check out rodbuilding.org like musky513 said.
-Read all the articles in the library
-Study the glossary
-Do a search for 'musky' and include all dates. Read every post.
-Create an account and ask lots of questions. The guys on that site are the best in the business.

2. Watch and re-watch the videos on Mudhole's site. I'd be careful what I watch on youtube, there's lots of bad info out there. Get advice from rod builders who are current and up to date on the latest and greatest rod building techniques and technology. There are lots of guys out there who learned to build decades ago and haven't learned much since. LOL

The general techniques used in building rods are the same no matter what kind of rod you're building- trout, bass, muskie, etc. What changes most are the components used. Knowing what components to use it a matter of knowledge and experience which you will gain over time. You need to consider things like the stature of the fisherman, how they hold the rod, what reel they use, blank power and action, what technique the rod will be used for, etc.

I could go on an on about the info you're looking for, but you can find it all when you do your research. If you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to help you out. Feel free to email me or give me a call ([email protected], 717-348-9366).
