Posts: 16 | Had a closed mag screw break on a 12oz jointed bait at the hinge. The bait did hit the bank on a cast but I've never had this problem before.

Posts: 1141 Location: NorthCentral WI | That's surprising to me. What type of wood is the bait? My only guess would be that the hole you drilled was too small, causing stress to the screw eye as you tightened it. I twisted a mag screw eye off into a maple bait before. With cedar or other soft wood that's not really an issue. The only way I could imagine one breaking is if it was compromised during the install.

Posts: 369 | That's very strange, those are extremely strong and I've never had one break on me before. Do you have a picture? The only thing I could think that might even have a small chance to break it is if you bent it too many times.

Posts: 742 Location: Grand Rapids MN | Ditto... My exact experiences as well. I also tried to take screw eyes out of maple that were epoxied and the heads just twist off. These were from Moores which is good stuff. In short if you over work them or screw in with a tight fit theres a chance of weakening them. MartinTD - 2/9/2015 6:18 AM That's surprising to me. Posts: 16 | Sorry no pics but it broke about 1/8" back from where it entered the resin body. Hole was drilled with a 1/16" pilot hole then epoxied in. The hinge was aligned so the screw eye wasn't bent at all. How heavy of a bait have you guys used the mag screw eyes on? Also where do most of you buy your screw eyes?

Posts: 369 | I've used them on jointed creepers and others like that, I use lure parts online. Just drill the hole slightly smaller so it just barely screws in then remove it and epoxy it in

Posts: 16 | Thanks. How much does the creeper weigh? What kind of pilot hole are you guys drilling for a .092?

Posts: 321 Location: Glen Ellyn Il | The correct size is 5/64. for the .092 and 1/16 for the .072. Also if you use a screw gun to drive the screw eye need to go slow otherwise it will overheat if you go fast. I epoxy all my screw eyes and in hard wood like maple you may have difficulty to take the screw out with out breaking it, the epoxy will create a huge tension due to the length/surface of the screw, you could get away on a softer wood. I recommend to drive the screw by hand and not use a drill Gino A mechanical contractor

Also where do most of you buy your screw eyes? Any of the ones I've broke/twisted off were in that same location. About an 1/8" down from the loop. At first I thought if it went in a little tighter the more "bite" the threads had until I realized I was weakening them doing this. Not saying you are but just throwing some past experiences. Just must be the weak spot in these. I wouldn't get to worried as I've pounded the snot out of 12-14" baits in the rocks with no issues. I believe all my stock is from Dick Moores. Hope this helps.

Posts: 369 | The creeper weighed a pound but was so heavy it sank so it's now in a bar in Wisconsin. He is right with the sizes for the pilot holes as I've ruined multiple lures by skipping this step. Also I would agree by doing it by hand much eaiser and your less likely to break a screw with it. I stopped using them mostly I love thru wire it works so much better Edited by Eaglescout2012 2/9/2015 9:56 PM

Posts: 1141 Location: NorthCentral WI | #43 drill bit for hardwoods. When I am doing 10+ baits at a time I like to drill all of my pilot holes; then, take a long (like 2") screw eye and cut the eye off with Knipex, tighten that into the chuck on the cordless drill and use it as a tap on all of the pilot holes you've drilled. Really works great! Nowadays I almost always thread the holes like this prior to paint. I learned my lesson after finising a paint job that I was particularly fond of only to snap off a screw eye while inserting it. That'll pee you off. ;) BTW, if an eye snaps off, any stub left in the lure is not coming out! HAHA. Cut it off with dremel and epoxy over and drill new hole or just junk it.

Posts: 1144 Location: Minnesota. | I've used .050 dia. for drilling the tap holes for .093 dia. eyes into Butternut, Cherry and Sugar Maple. I just go deep enough (1 1/4") by taping a "flag" of masking tape as a "stop". Use a small finishing nail as a lever to pre-screw the eye in then back it out before finishing the bait. When I seat it as a last step I heat (use a good quality heat gun...I have a Weldy) some 20 min epoxy to "runny" and work it into the hole - it'll suck down - then apply some epoxy to the threads and gently but continuously turn the finishing nail to seat the eye. If it works on Cherry and Hard Maple it'll work in any of your soft woods. I like more wood compression for strength and it seems to work so far but I haven't made many baits....just my experience. Posts: 16 | Appreciate everyones response! I'm going to play around with using a few different drill bits for pilot holes as suggested. I think it may have been a fluke though as I've only broken these in the shop and not when casting. Never be too safe though. Any of you guys broke any casting baits? If so how heavy were they?

Posts: 1144 Location: Minnesota. | Oops... my bad, seems I made a mistake in the previous post. I got confused with another project. My 3/32" eyes from Lures Online actually measured .105 - .110 dia. and I used an .078 dia. drill to drill those holes. Sorry for the mistake.
