My son went out today to see if he could catch a couple walleyes at the Hat Rapids dam here. Instead, he got a 34 and a 36" muskie, on a Reef Runner. He was pretty happy to release two while fishing for 'eyes, to say the least!

That hurts!  I have trouble catching them when I fish strictly for muskie.  Maybe I should switch to walleye.  NAH, it's still fun to try.

Steve, To people who fish rivers alot this is really not that uncommon,as those little male walleyes move up,so do young of the year perch and right there is the easy pick`ins for the muskys. If one really pays attention the water temps/flow play the biggest factors in this musky location/bite situation.normally find this short lived but very intense and bait choice is very insignificant but cranks usually outproduce jigs and minnows!I myself had a 4 day several years ago and know some others with 6. Congrads to your son on the great releases and come opening day, depending on conditions of course those fish could still be in the area? Handy

Steve,

SSSHHHH!!!! I do not think they were musky, but funny looking walleye, right? (WINK WINK!!) Must have been fishing right below the parking lot area at the top end of the slack water. I found this to be a good little spot by accident last year. The "funny looking walleye" like this area.

Chuck

May 24th cannot come too soon. Thank god for the Petenwell Tourny on the 17th and 18th though.

Not unusual at all. Had a 5 fish half hour(all mid thirties males and got snapped by a couple more) on a spot a couple counties up from there walleye fishing a couple years back. I don't see the need however, to point out specific isolated local spots here, just my opinion. Small spots like that are known by enough people, and internet exploitation often harms them for the die hards that have fished them for years as I've personnally seen on the rivers I fish in the past. No offense.

I have been there many times without catching a 'ski. Not that this was terribly unusual, but it was cool to hit the fish at exactly the right time. I don't think one needs worry about 'exploitation' from anyone here. Just sharing info, and I will continue to because that is what this site is about. No offense taken.

I was fishing below a dam in the Hayward area last summer and landed 3 in less than 20 minutes -low to mid 30" fish.  But the big one got away, my line went slack and for some reason I didn't set the hook, I watched her spit the lure out on the surface!  Can't win all the time I guess.  My brother was fishing right beside me and couldn't get thing.  Right place, right time, and right bait.
