Eric it took me a day longer than I thought it would after seeing how the new bait worked but I have several pictures of a mid 30's with an orange piece of rubber deep in its craw. Conditions were very, very, sunny. If this is the first fish of the year on this bait, does that mean I get to drop the electric drill on your bare foot? Or is there some other nifty prize?!!

Even though I got ripped off for winter fishing most of this winter due to water conditions and temperatures, it is still fun when people send me their baits to try out. E sent me a black glider this winter that didn't glide, and come to find out it was his deep sea model, he had sent me one that was weighted. Still I did have a day to try it this winter and the only fish I saw, the only day I fished in February, came up and followed those little flippers all the way to the boat, and it was of the bigger variety.

Lately he has sent me this orange rubber thing which I believe is his current production model. I think these were demonstrated in a pool show up there. If you liked them there, you will like them even better when you cast them. Consistently able to keep it in the top 18" of the water colummn with minimal effort and still run it slow. Also sinks at a medium slow rate and I would feel comfortable with this bait as deep as 4-6 feet without weight. It swings back and forth and up and down and you can alternate it with reeling and the little tails keep going wicka wicka wicka all the way in. I would guess I got around 1.5 to 2 hours casting with this thing today and only had two instances where the treble hooked into the bait and fouled the action somewhat. Do to its flat running plane on retrieve, I believe it will hold its depth pretty good, as long as you don't start to really crank on it or jerk it up. Lots of control capability. Unfortunately, as with other rubber I have used, this baby does have an affinity for wood, particularly as it goes over the top, and don't let it travel into a bush. But it can be worked through upright timber surprisingly well due to its fairly minimal hook arrangement, and the fact the hooks are set back from the nose a ways actually let me bump upright stuff and go around it most of the time and I did have a learning effect as I used it more, I became better with it.(OH, yes you can skip this thing too, hmmmm piers?)

I was getting up to 18" diversions from a straight line on a twitch type of retrieve but mostly I was keeping it within a foot and going a little faster. Pop it hard and it does a spin in the water. Pause and it hangs pretty good with minimal effort and goes into kind of freefall when it sinks.

I was fishing a lake in flux today with lots of water coming in and going out, and actually cooler water coming in had the mud sliding below the warmer surface water and surprisinly good clarity was maintained in the coves and main body. High pressure, cloudless cold front. I had blown one fish in the way back of a cove on a hard bait. I was fishing a few pieces of standing timber in a shoreline pocket with the breeze coming into shore and adding a little murk to the water in this area. Gradual slope from shore to a deep flat. Was planning to pull the boat after this spot. Fishing the wood in 4-6 feet depth, and specifically looking to come close to it. Actually running the bait below the visibility line, which I hate to do, but thought it neccessary here to come close to fish. Had barely started when, right there on the second stob, the line shoots out to the right of me. I had not seen, and could not see the fish but I knew something had the "RUBBER HAIRY GLIDER" atttached to my 80lb. "TUFF" line, so I reared back on my "FENWICK 7 FOOT HMX" and let him have it, while at the same time cranking furiously on my "HANK PARKER BPS GARCIA 5600" casting reel, to try and maintain a tight line. Luckily my knot, and my "GUIDE'S CHOICE 90 LB. TEST LEADER" held, and I was able to wrestle him into submission. I got him near my "LUND" watching out for the prop on my "MERCURY 115". Should I use my magnum "BECKMAN" landing net. Nawwwwwww, why get it wet. I quickly shot some in the water pics with my disposable "KODAK" and then hand landed the fish with a grip over his head. Reaching in with my "TWO DOLLAR FLEA MARKET LONG NOSED PLIERS" I quickly extricated the fine "MUSTAD TREBLE" and let the fish swim away a happier and wiser fish indeed. And that's how it was, 11 th day of May, year of our lord 2003,...........

Hey Eric, no telling how many I could catch if I were testing a white one or pinkish white one.....

Looking forward to using mine, as soon as season opens up here. Neat lure, for sure.

FSF, what brand SHOES were you wearing? NIKE has some pretty good contracts.

Great post, I needed a laugh today.

BTW, congratulations on the nice fish!

I'm w/ Worrall...tell us the type gas used for the tow vehicle, boat, brand oil, and any and all details that you may have forgotten to mention in this riveting action packed description of aforementioned trip! If possible, list wildlife seen, and provide the sub species of each, as well as size and type of timber fished. And let us not forget the list of food items consumed before, during, and after the trip, as well as the type of poagy bait eaten in between!:O

FSF:

Jeepers!

I thought for sure you would mention that you had pulled your LUND (A GENMAR PRODUCT OF FINE BOATS) to the lake with your 1996 F-1500 CHEVE 6-CYLINDER PICK-UP (A FINE GM PRODUCT) all the while making an incredible 11 1/2 MPG using EXXON'S (A DOW JONES LEADER) 87 octane gas available across the US at $1.69.9/Gal.

Congrads on the fish, save a few for next winter.

Doug Johnson

Well Doug, you are correct, I am remiss in not mentioning some of the other great products that went into the catching of this magnificent beast.
As Sworrall himself pointed out, I do owe my strong hookset to the fact that I was "GELLIN" on the front deck in my white "DR. SCHOLL'S", and of course my "REINFORCED CROTCH HAYNE'S JOCKEY SHORTS" made sure that any surprise discharges caused by a fish of this magnitude, eating my bait on such a sunburn kind of a day, were duly absorbed and left no tell tale, embarassing, stains. The fact that my heart was beating at all was directly related to the extra cup of McDONALD'S coffee I drank that morning on the way to the lake(coffee which incidentally is available all over the U.S., and including DISNEY WORLD!!).

All the while I was setting the hook and fighting this beast, I had my "SOUTHERN BELL CELLULAR PHONE" pre set to "SPEED DIAL" Dick Pearson, in case I had to consult him on the possible record setting aspect of such a catch. It was quickly noted with my "WALMART, EXTRA PAIR FOR EIGHTY DOLLARs POLARIZED SUN GLASSES" that I would not be needing the phone quite yet. Luckily with modern technology I am able to instantly share the story with all my online aquaintances by using my "IBM" computer and of course a good dose of "WINDOWS" software.
