Subject: Motor Hours

Looking at purchasing a 2012 150 Optimax there is 300 hours on this motor. Is 100 hours a year a lot, average, or little hours?

I guess it would depend, did you get a print out of the amount of time by percentage the motor was run at different RPM ranges.

Because 7 or 8 hours of idling is the equivalent of maybe 1 hour of wide open running in terms of cycles the motor runs.

How would one go about getting a print out? Is there a computer you can hook up to it and get this info?

Ya. I never personal had it done but I have seen them. How did you get the 300 hour figure? That's why I asked i thought you had that information

The current owner stated that it had 305 hours on it.

100 hours a year is about average in the Midwest.
300 hours is a small portion of the life span of a good motor, so nothing to worry about.
It is a good idea to have a mechanic look at any used outboard.
A test drive is also a good idea.

Yea hours on a motor mattered in the 1960ies. A well maintained new motor can be used everyday until you die if your over 40 years old. I had to laugh on the kicker post. People use the kicker to save hours on the main motor. As if trolling will hurt your main motor or reduce it`s lifetime. Motors want to run and will do so for a long time. If things go wrong it`s little stuff that has nothing to do with hours on the motor. In fact the more you use a good motor the better they run. If you take a few seasons off and leave them sit that's when the problems start.
