Location: MN | Looking to purchase a jerkbait rod that might handle other duties as well. I have read every jerkbait rod post going back to 2002. It's pretty clear things preferences have changed over the years. I'm just confused ... What are the thoughts on a st Croix 7' or 7'6" heavy. I don't plan on throwing any really heavy lures so I would stay in the 4-5 oz range or less. Also I'm really short 5'7".
Thanks in advance this is a great resource for someone starting out.
Current rod is 7'6" MH st Croix. |

Location: Gilberts IL/Rhinelander WI | I have a custom jerk bait rod, made on a predator H -1". Some consider this to be the best bucktail blank there is. It's 8'3" and probably my most versatile rod. |

| Personally I think your would be best served by finding specific rods for each application. As someone who throws a ton of glides and jerks I like a rod that is shorter and stiffer at the tip than my bucktail rod. I get better action and better control with this. I like the LT "jerk" but the St Croix "classic jerk" (6'9") might be a better fit -(Im 6'3' so I like the longer) St croix has a great deal on them right now. | Depending upon what you want to spend I would explore a custom made rod. I have a an 8' H Predator with the tip trimmed by 2" for jerk baits. If you really want to find something that would serve both purposes (jerk and bucktail) work with a custom builder to get an optimum compromise. It is slightly more expensive than a SC LT but you will get a versatile rod that can serve 2 purposes. |
