| I have learned to use a needle to let the air out of the muskie before I release them. Seems to work well. Does anyone else use this technique with the deep water fish...TJ |

| I have never used a needle to let the air out of a muskies belly, the only time I could see that you would need to do this is if a fish won't release properly.
I once helped a friend release a fish that appeared to have a bloated look to it and wouldn't release. All we did was one of us held the tail, while I ran my hands from back to front and "burped" the fish. The fish puked up a huge mess of half digested minnows, quickly righted itself and swam away VERY strong.
I would think that a needle would be a LOT more invasive to a fish. God bless.

The feature article in this months Muskie Magazine from Muskies Inc. is a re-print of information I wrote for pamphlets to be available at Gander Mountain locations.
I have never had to use a needle...quite frankly I would be a little uncomfortable in knowing how to properly use it. The burping method has worked well for me in the past and it is definately what I would recommend to the average fisherman. I have only had to do this maybe 4-5 times in all the years I've been chasing Muskies but I am certain without doing it they would have died as they were unable to make a descent.
All the more reason to throw a "Lindy bouyou" out where the fish goes down so you can come back to the same are and check for it 15-20 minutes later.

| If I remember correctly, tracking studies have shown that this doesn't even work for walleyes even if they release "strong." I could be wrong...but.

For a bigger muskie you must pick one end of their digestive system or the other and suck with all your might, when you feel the release of gas it is safe to let the fish go. If you are a true sportsman you would do this while the fish is in the water so as not to stress it any more than is absolutely needed.
