Posts: 51 | Ok, hoping someone has some more knowledge than I do with motors. The story is as follows... this is my dad's boat. He doesnt use it very often maybe 2-3 times a year. The motor was having a hard time idling earlier this year so we put some carb cleaner in and did some very minor adjustments to carb adjusters. Started idleing better so we assumed things were better. Then we took it out on the river tonight and again, it idled great but didn't have any top end speed. At full throttle it would maybe reach 1/2 speed, maybe a little less... wouldn't even get on plane. We had a screw driver in the boat and adjusted the carb screws a little bit more, but didnt seem to make much of a difference. However, after some trouble shooting we noticed that it would rev at full speed in nuetral... but under load, it still wouldn't plane out. it would seem to almost stall out. I'm not sure if it's a misfiring issue with the plugs or a carb issue? I wasn't sure if anyone has ever had/heard of any issues like this... care to venture a guess as to where to start diagnosing the issue. My dad seems to think it's a carb issue, i'm not so sure since it will go full rev when in nuetral. Basically, we don't know where to start, so any thoughts on the issue would give us somewhere to start.

Posts: 1096 Location: Hayward, WI | Start with basics: compression check, verify spark on all cylinders, fresh fuel, new plugs. After that I would suspect you need to have your carbs cleaned, might also look at rebuilding your fuel pump at the same time. Get a manual or have a dealer rebuild carbs and make sure all adjustments are correct.

Posts: 51 | When cleaning the carbs, do we need to take them all apart or just take them off and place them in Carb cleaner for like 24 hours? I do have a copy of the manual from replacing the impeller last year, I just don't want to have to do more work than necessary. ![]()

Posts: 153 | your going to want to completely take them apart you can get carb kits online for pretty cheap other wise just go t the dealer and get them they come with new gaskets floats etc. also replace your fuel lines at well your fuel lines could be falling apart on the inside and pieces of rubber could be getting stuck in your carb jets any auto parts store should have fuel line just take pieces of the old stuff with to match it up for size check your fuel filter as well good luck

Posts: 3507 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, This is definitely a full tear down and rebuild of the carbs. In doing so, getting a rebuild kit for each is the best thing you can do to ensure there are no leaks within the gasket system. One small leak will wreak havoc on getting it to run properly. Posts: 28 | you want to exercise caution when adjusting carbs or rebuilding, if you have multiple carbs they have to both be adjusted the same or you will have some cylinders running leaner/richer than others and that is not good and can cause bigger problems,

Posts: 51 | I think we are just going to take it somewhere and have them rebuilt... we were looking at it this evening and i just dont think we trust ourselves to do it. Does anyone have a rough estimate of what this might cost? $500, $1000?

I may be way off here but snowmobile repair guys make their living on carb cleaning. I can't imagine they are much different on a 2 stroke outboard to a snowmobile other than outboards are probably smaller. I bet they are cheaper than a marine mechanic.

Posts: 51 | Thanks for the help guys... ended up taking it in and had the carbs rebuilt for about $250. Picking the boat up tomorrow, but the mechanic stated he took it out and ran like a new motor. Stated 3 of the 4 gas ports in the bottom carb were clogged and 2 of the 4 in the high speed carb were clogged. Thanks for the help everyone, appreciate it. Now, gotta do some fishing this weekend!
