Although weather will make a difference......late Sept. in Vilas, would you guys get up early to fish or stay out later night fishing and sleep in a bit? I would be willing to do both and get less sleep if both bites are good but what would you prefer that time of year?

Thanks,
Jaimy

From my experience the morning is slow and the evening is great. Water warms up a bit by late morning and the fish seem to perk up.

I'll be in Vilas this weekend. Leaving this evening. We plan to fish both sunrise and sunset. Currently speaking, sunrise is 630 and sunset is 730, so in all reality if you fish an hour into dark you can still be in bed by 10 if you so wish. I don't get to musky fish often, so we are out there maximizing our chances whenever we can. I will report back after my trip and let you know which bite was better.

imo it depends a whole lot more on the weather than it just being morning or evening... watch the majors/minors and weather...and fish as much as you can, have had great mornings... and great evenings... muskies don't read muskiefirst.

I agree 100% with BNelson. I have fished Vilas county, not that I feel location matters on this, for the last few years from opener to close. Have had great success at all times of the day, all season long. Fish when you can.

Thanks for the info. I'm usually on the water ALL day to maximize my limited vacation time. I was just wondering if I'm better off focusing on early or late to give myself the best odds. This year I have had more fish in the morning, with bigger fish hitting or following later evening. I most often fish at least an hour into dark but not much later.....should I give it a try much later into the night in late Sept.

I usually concentrate on both and maybe take some sort of break/rest in the middle of the day unless there is a major/minor. If I'm in a cabin on a musky lake, and I know it's going to be a good day, and there's coffee in that cabin, I've got a built in alarm clock that won't let me sleep past 5:00-6:00 AM. I'm like a kid on Christmas waiting to get out there. September and early October mornings up north are special.

Mornings are my favorite. I love first light till sunrise.... especially in the fall.

Good luck.
