Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | Where would you go for the best opportunity for a big fish (50+) but also have the best average size (for those times the 50s aren't jumping in the boat)? Please explain your answer.

Posts: 1185 Location: Iowa | Never fished the Goon, but have been fishing eagle for Muskies since 2001, the sheer mass to most of the fish in that lake combined with the year classes that have reached the 50+ and even 52+ is amazing. It is definitely a tough lake to fish and they by no means jump in the boat, but we usually have a couple shots at a couple fish a day and see anywhere from 6 on slow days to 30+ on days when they're cranking. Average day is a couple shots a day and 6-12 fish seen per day with a shot or 2 at a 50"+ throughout a week. Of course it's all weather dependent and depends on the time of year. We usually go in the fall post turnover.

Please explain your answer. I hate the Goon. Possibly even more than I hate Packer fans. Ok, not a good comparison. I hate the Goon so much if it were go there or stay home for my Canada trip and work (in a coal mine, while land-sharks nibble my balls), I might go to work. I've done trips at both, and though I suck on any fish over 49", the Eagle wins hands down for a number of reasons. -More shots at more fish of the same size, and bigger. Yes, I miss those shots, but thats me, not the lake. -scenery and experience of Eagle is light years better than the Goon. (pristine wilderness experience versus fishing a shore line on a GOLF COURSE?). Even mid-summer, Eagle isn't nearly what you would call "crowded" in any sense. -Goon: fish shallow weeds or where the weeds used to be, and that's it. Eagle: fish can be in weeds, on rock walls, rock points, weed/rock combos. More diversity of where you can fish, keeps the brain more happier -Goon is ugly sections (by Dryden), then sections totally not marked and will wreck your boat. Eagle has clearer water, darker water, in between, and a much better portion of the lake is marked. Safer to navigate le boat. -yes, I am partial to Andy Myers on Eagle...but take the top 4 lodges on Eagle versus the best 4 on the Goon. Eagle wins. Now Steve Worrall may fight me on the first point...but back to my admitting that I miss everything over 49". But I rocked the boat setting the hook on a 52-53" in his boat on the Goon...so, I admit it.

Posts: 1767 Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | agree with many of slammers points for the most part. Out of countless trips to Canada there was one singular time when I WANTED to go home and left early and that was on Wabigoon for some of the reasons he touched on.... Eagle can be downright brutal some days/weeks but I would certainly go there over Wabigoon in a heartbeat. Especially with a chance to focus on the eastern end of the lake. fishing wise for Eagle I think it is only fair to keep in mind that many people that do well out there are either being guided quite a bit, or put in a lot of time to learn the lake and adjust techniques. Not a very easy place to just show up as a rookie and consistently contact fish and find a lot of productive spots. I've seen guys show up on Eagle whom have done well in other places get to the point of near tears throughout a weeks stay ( ive had a couple "Eagle Lake meltdowns" myself ha).......I've had such a wide range of results there over many trips it is impossible to try and guess what the expected trip can consist of. You could come home with multiple 50's, or you could come home catching 2 40" fish with nothing but stories about the ones you saw or the ones that got away.
