So I finally got out in my rig with the new to me 1994 Johnson 60hp tiller.
I had a merc 45 prior, so I was looking up my performance as she had a tough time when I was loaded up.
My question is how do I know I have the best setup??
She ran well and planned out quickly, but my manual says 5500-6000 max rpm and I could only get her to 5400 and 34mph(gps) and I played with the trim to find the max rpm. This was with just myself in the boat. This is on my 1988 Ranger 680T, with a SS 13.25" Turbo 15pitch prop that is in like new shape. I am very happy with the performance, but that is because it is quite an improvement over my old set up. I want to get the most out of her, and run it so the motor is working in a way that she will last a long time!

What was your top speed with the 45? I am looking to make the same upgrade.

weevil I am not sure as I did not have a gps unit until now, sorry. I had a hard time getting on plane when I had more than myself in the boat so I wanted to switch.

Hiya,

Top speed will be about 35 or so given a light load and a slight wind... Outside chance to 37 mph..

The 45 merc you had I'm betting was from early to middle 80's?... If so those motors were given thir hp ratings at the motor, not the prop. With your 60 on there now, you are running 60hp at the prop as motors from around 1990 or so ( not sure of the exact year) were allowed to rate the hp there rather than at the motor head.

Your 45 probably was right around 40 to 41 at the prop. A worthwhile change to upgrade.
