For any skeptics out there that don't feel the world record will ever be broken, there was news last night of a world record lake trout being caught. It weighed in at 33kilograms or 72.6lbs. I didn't catch the entire report, but I believe it was caught in either Great Bear or Great Slave Lake. I think the previous record was around 65lbs. They showed footage of the guy holding the fish in the boat and it appeared to be struggling to escape, so I don't know if it was released or not. What a monster!!!

Kinda gives hope that the present muskie barriers may someday soon be broken. If anyone has more details please share them with us.

Cheers,
Chris[:p]

The was a 58" musky caught opening weekend with a 28" girth. A few more bigmacs and that fish has great potential.
Have to find that fish in the fall

..Chris,

Saw that Laker on the news last night what a fat beast. Go figure it was the ladies first time fishing from a boat. Good ol' beginners luck!

Hey magicmike- I would love to see a pic of that fish too! Do you think you could send it to me (not interested in the lake!)? Thanks!

Chris....the previous IGFA recognized lake trout record is 72.0 pounds caught I believe in 1995...not that old of a record.

Not to rain on the world record parade but there is a great deal of difference between fishing lake trout waters which have limited accessibility in the Northwest Territories and musky waters. Most musky waters are very accessible to anyone and get fished. Great Bear Lake is enormous and there are only a handful of lodges up there with a fishing season of only a few months. The pressure is miniscule compared to most good musky waters.

I do hope someone breaks the musky record so their is no controversy surrounding it. But comparing it to mack fishing is a bit of a stretch. "hope springs eternal"

Good fishin,

Chris, I read a post(?) recently on what would the chances of catching such a fish; short feeding period, etc. Wonder if that fish would be real deep, what section of the lake, bait size + so on. Wish Doug, Dick or Pete etc. would make some comments as to their thoughts on this!!! MAJOR HINT.....personally I'm shooting to break the 40" barrier + will be content to just get out + fish. I do like to kick back + eat a candy bar though + think what it would take to do such a thing! Imagine what it would be like.... the excitement, the realization of life never being the same... I sincerely hope one of you guys catch it as I couldn't handle it! [:sun:]

Doc Esox, I think I know what you mean, kinda like the muskies in Georgian Bay. Virtually untapped. The east and north shores are fished somewhat, but the main bay receives no pressure.

Cheers,
Chris

i can't believe the georgian bay is still considered untapped- after all the publicity it has been getting in the last year... still sounds like the best bet for a future world record to me. hope to see it in the next couple years.

Chris,
With the New proposed size limit of 54" for the NY portion of Lake Erie and 48" for the Upper and Lower Niagara River, the Big One's will have the chance to even get Bigger! With most everyone all on the same page in total support the New Size Limits should pass all the hurdles and be in place by next season. Chris,

The new size limits will help out everyone. Hopefully we will see a new record in the next few years. I hear the limits around are way are going to increase. Lets keep our fingures crossed....
