Yes, this is a serious thread. Looking for chapstick brands that have a high UPF rating and aren't greasy and unpleasant to wear. Is there such a product?

I'm not much for wearing chapstick during any season but I fried my lips badly a few times this year. Starting to take sun protection a bit more seriously than I did in the past but I clearly overlooked this area.

I get cold sores from sunburned lips so I have tried many. Favorite was vanilla Chapstick. Haven't found it for many years now. Then I found Lip Pro. Order it online out of California. They also make a great sunscreen. The Lip Pro comes on a ring if you desire so you keep it right on your boat keyring. Always reminds you to put it on.

I really like blistex menthol SPF 15. Really soothes lips and tastes pleasant and offers good protection. No need to go any higher in SPF, they taste worse and if you want any protection to be effective, it will have to be re-administered multiple times daily anyway no matter the SPF. Just took an exam on oral cancers in school, cancer on the lip is quite common for avid outdoors people and protection should be taken more seriously.

I use Ocean Potion, lip 45. I also ride motorcycles all summer and blistered my lips a few years ago on a cross country trip. I dont go out without sun protection now.

I have been using a Banana Boat Lip Balm that is rated at 45 SPF. It came as a free product along with some other Banana Boat product that I purchased, but you can order it online if you cannot find it at the store. I have also used the Blistex with 15 SPF and usually use that one for everyday use. I really take sun protection very seriously these days since I developed a sun allergy 2-3 years ago. When I'm on the water, in addition to the lip balm I wear a wide brimmed hat, a buff covering most of my face and neck, 100 SPF Neutrogena sunscreen for exposed skin on my face such as nose cheeks and above my chin, sun procection gloves and a Columbia Tamiami long sleeve fishing shirt and of course polarized sun glasses. I also take a Loratadine tablet once a day during the warm weather months to help keep the allergy symptoms in check. The allergy is a nuisance, but skin cancer is nothing to mess around with.

And you can tie a couple of bucktails with it in the off season.

I have the same problem and have tried a few different types of balm. None really worked. The only thing that's worked for me is covering up. Get a bandana and start fishing outlaw style!

i also use to get sunburn blisters, sun bum chapstick is awesome. its very smooth and not "waxy" like all the other sunscreen chapsticks. also getting a sun mask is a smart idea. the Pelagic branded ones are way nicer than the buff/fishhard ones when the temp gets really hot. The ones made of cotton are too hard to breathe through when youre trying to cover up and just fog up your shades. Youll be surprised at how cool a really nice sunmask will keep you in the hot sun.

Aquaphor with spf. You will never go back to anything else. Talk to any dermatologist and this is what they will tell you to use.

I've been using the blue ChapStick "Moisturizer/Original" for years. It's SPF 15.

A week straight on LOTW for 12 hours a day in the sun, I've never had burned lips in 13 years.

Less than $2 and your problem is solved.

I have tried several and am happy with Dermatone
it comes up to 23 spf or so but here is a good read on spf ratings
I just reapply every two hours or so.

Vaseline, chapstick makes your lips dryer and need more chapstick, like drinking on a hot day.

I have eliminated the chaped lips/sunburned lips problem by using the neck gaiters. It took about four hours to get used to it the first time, but now I don't go out without it. What a great innovation. I am also using the long sleeve SPF shirts. May save many trips to the dermatologist.

I use the same. Wal Mart had it for $.99 for years. Now I think I have to shell out $1.09.
