Is it my imagination, or is Eagle River a haven for small muskies. I'm looking at the results from the PMTT, and it's kind of disappointing. Are there any big fish in Eagle River? Such a beautiful place, and you would think that those lakes would be loaded with them. However, all I've seen are small fish. I'm really surprised the PMTT is there every year. I know why......

There are some nice fish there. It's primarily a 'numbers' destination, and over 40 were caught by the PMTT teams yesterday. Great place for a tournament because of the diverse fishery, fish -under -almost -any- conditions, and great numbers. And, it's a destination that supports competitive angling, which is important.

There are obviously lakes known for action with a higher density of fish, and lakes known for size which have fewer fish, but are capable of supporting giants. The chain has always been known for the former. Lots and lots of fish in there, but it doesn't really have the capability to hold a ton of giants. There are without question some big ones in there, but its an action body of water, simple as that. Like Lake Wingra in Madison, it's loaded with fish, but it can't easily support giants. There are plenty of bigger, deeper lakes with better forage for muskies up in Vilas to grow larger, but all bodies of water are different.

Now if you move down to Watersmeet lake on the chain, you can tangle with some river fish, and those guys have a little more heft to 'em.

Edit: Steve said it perfectly

Been up there 34 years. Eagle River Chain has always been more of a numbers kind of body of water. However, the last decade or so has shown me many larger fish. Fish used to run 28-32 as a common size. Now I'm seeing and catching a lot of 37's to 40's and we usually see a handful of 42-44s.

To me the Chain has gotten a little better with age.

For what it's worth, my records over the last 5yrs show a average size increase from 28in to 31 in on 3 lakes. While seemingly insignificant, I like the direction. ER chain is a great fishery, I just fear boat traffic is/has? ruining it.

Been fishing in tournments in ER for a number of years. All the muskies we ever encountered are small. (mid 30's is all we have ever seen or caught.

Norm is correct. Matter of fact, there are no longer any lakes on the Three Lakes Side... move along
