I'm going to Canada for the first time since 2001 on July 18. The last time I went was prior to 9/11, so we didn't need passports. We also didn't need the Outdoors Card, so this is all new to me.

My question is this: would you recommend buying the Outdoors Card and license online before we head north? I've called a bait shop in Nestor Falls, and they assured me that buying them once we get into Canada won't be an issue. Those of you who frequently travel to Canada to fish, what do you normally do?

I purchased mine already for an August trip. Already have my card in my wallet and license printed up from the purchase online. My take was that it was one less item to forget to do, and one less expense while I am there.

I typically buy mine online now. Kind of a bummer because I like the bait shop experience but now just stop in if I feel like it to chat and look at stuff. Otherwise I drive to where I am going.
I might do things differently when I take my kids with me. It would be kind of a bummer for them to miss out on that part of the fishing trip experience.

Its not an issue, just got one for a relative that came up to fish. Walked into Canadian Tire and they print you a ticket/game seal looking sticker right on the spot.

We used to buy our licenses at the resort where we always stay at in Ontario. It was always one of our first day rituals after arriving, checking in, unloading and putting the boat in the water. Now the resort doesn't even sell licenses anymore. I think the first year that OMNR started online license sales we had to use the resort's computer and printer to buy our licenses, but now we just buy them online and print them in advance.

Thanks for the input! If I order the card now and it doesn't come before my trip, I can show the receipt as a proof of purchase?

If I remember right, you can print a digital copy after purchase to utilize before you get your card.... And like stated, just get it out of the way, and purchase it early. I go with the same 2 guys every year to Canada, and although it doesn't take forever, I am always the one standing in the boat waiting to go, while they are in the lodge buying licenses.

I just bought my license and renewed my card online. They both printed on the same page. Be sure to "test" print before you try the real thing so you have the right target. I like the "save" option a lot in case I loose the original (not that that's ever happened ----) I've also run into to problems with Bait Shop's printers or modems being down which can really screw up your day. Another thing to remember is to call your CC issuer and tell them your going to Canada. I made that mistake once much to my regret.

I wish you could buy camping permits online. I bought my outdoors card and license that way and it was painless.

I like to buy my license at the bait shop in Nestor Falls just to give me a few more minutes for the guys to tell me where the best fishing action is.

That's a great point. Think they'll have much info on the action on fly-in lakes?

We've bought them in the bait shop just through International Falls. They provide the card and the license. Some lodges don't provide the card, only the license. I suggest getting it online and remember you need BOTH the card and license with you when fishing... unless that's changed in the last 2 years.

Up here right now. Need both with you in the boat. Just another way for the Onario MNR to soak you for another 3$ per year. Just should've raised the price three bucks on licenses when they went to this years ago...if you ask me.

We all bought ours online this year. One less stop through Fort Francis or Dryden = More time fishing.
