So I'm looking to gain some depth, like 10-15 feet, on my retrieve. I've heard of guys weighting them down or just letting them sink and reel in slow. Anybody have any good tips on the best way to do this, maybe how much weight to add, or even what bucktails work better than others for this? Thanks.

i have made a few of my own and add quite a bit of weight to them with egg sinkers in line. that coupled with the heavier .40 blades seems to work pretty good. you still need to let them sink to get in the 10-15ft range, but they get there a lot faster and are easier to keep down at depth. you can also use existing bucktails. just get the wire and swap the components over to the new wire with added weight. if you aren't concerned with how they look, you can add the weight in place of the lure body. the 3/8 oz weights seem to work well for even distribution and keep the bait traveling fairly level.

I would try Stealth weighted leaders. That way you can use all your favorite bucktails without modifying the actual baits.

What about a rubber core sinker just above the leader? Never tried, just asking if it would work.

I like to use 1oz egg sinkers on my bucktails now. I can still burn them to get them right under the surface. But I have one that is probably pushing 5-6oz and if I slow roll it, I can easily get it down to 10ft, maybe even further... and that is without letting it sink first. If I let it sink I can get it pretty deep.

You can also add a bell sinker with a split ring to the bucktail. I do this all the time.

Thanks for the advice guys. I ordered a weighted leader and might try adding weight to it if needed. Appreciate the help!

Hirsch's Ghosttails (original 8") are so slow the blade spins as the bait sinks. Add 3" twin-tail Berkley Powergrubs to slow it down even more.

If your looking for a bait to slow roll try a Heartthrob. You can let it fall and crank as slow as you need and the blades will always keep spinning. Just another option
