Thanks for reposting and jogging our collective memories Steve.

I just did a quick search and couldn't find any "new" news on the progress of these cases. What a shame.

I'd be willing to bet if the success of an NFL team relied on the perpetrators guilt/innocence, this would likely have been resolved already. I fully expect a slap of the wrist sentence to be meted out and buried in the news on July 3rd, and that will be the last we hear of it (if in fact we hear anything). I sure hope I am wrong.

I hope they throw the book at them, and the 34 buyers as well!!

I wonder, can they confiscate deep fryers used to cook illegal fish?!

I'm trying to avoid getting too politicaly opinionated on this, but I've been looking further into this all morning and if I'm reading everything correctly it seems like there will be some decently healthy state and possibly federal charges brought on the non-tribal members and buyers involved, as for the 10 tribal members, it looks like they will at most be tried in their tribal courts, I think the federal charges were or will be convoluted and ultimately dropped. (Disclaimer: I might be wrong and welcome any updates that I may not be aware of)
"Regarding the 10 tribal members who face charges in tribal court, Jamie Mitchell, chief conservation officer for the Leech Lake Reservation, said fines can be levied up to $500, along with up to one year revocation of hunting and fishing rights."

So while I hope justice is served the more I read the more defeated I begin to feel on the topic.

Here's an Outdoor News article about a Federal Judge dropping charges against the 10 tribal members. http://www.outdoornews.com/December-2013/Federal-judge-drops-charge...

Here's an additional Oudtoord News article that goes into a bit more details on the evils of this operation including “In one case, a trophy muskie was sold for mounting."
http://www.outdoornews.com/April-2013/Northern-Minnesotans-charged-...

Heres the DNR page where they talk about "Operation Squarehook" but they haven't provided any updates on developments in the charges brought against all offenders involved since April of 2013.

Same happening in Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Unfortunately, when these cases end up in tribal court they're all too often resolved with a hundred dollar fine, a "don't do it again," and a wink of the eye.

Should I pick on the mouth breathing, knuckle dragging, bobber "fishermen" slaying muskie down in your neck of the woods ?

Lighten up Francis, it was a joke.

What a great idea, I am surprised our founding fathers did not come up with that one ... they must have been out fishing when that issue was discussed ...

They did.

They just had to figure out a way to take the First Nations/Native Americans lands without killing them all and getting a bunch of troops and civilians killed in the process. Sooo, they entered into the treaties after what amounted to several wars that still stand today with the sovereign nations that are the Tribes.

Of course, when it comes to muskies, we should all forget or revise our nation's history to suit us and toss the entire legal system out the window. Until we need it to defend what we want, then we'd revert back for a while...or not.

Kind'a hard to imagine this actually happened isn't it. I'll admit to being tainted and have some inbred attitudes of my own. I need to get reminded now an' then. Sometimes it's hard. Thanks for the jostle...

I'm a decorated VN vet. Was once proud to go pull triggers. Now....not so #*^@ed sure. Makes me wonder why.

(I'm out in case this runs amok!)

Steve, it's difficult to get a handle on the realities of our past... The revisionist history we are force fed throughout our youth paints a very different picture. I admit to some bias myself. When I see that two walleye daily bag limit, as a landowner, there are times I get angry knowing that the the tribes can net/spear 500 pounds of walleyes out of that very lake. I will likely not eat 500 pounds of walleye in my life. You hear the talk around the bars of how the tribes ruined this or that lake, and it's not difficult to get angry, because we feel like it belongs to us. We own it. We have a right to it. Sometimes we need to be reminded that such is not the case. Some say we took it "fair and square", like in most cases of war between nations. But then there's that pesky treaty thing...

I think anybody who owns property in the ceded territory needs to spend some time to familiarize themselves with the treaties and consider the chain of ownership of their property. It's an eye opener for sure.

As far as people saying the land was taken "fair and square", when is anything "taken" fair and square ?

If we could first apply that to the differences between the way laws apply to the rich and famous in this country than to middle class or poor "regular" folks it would be a start. Instead most will wrap themselves in the flag while trumpeting this is the greatest nation ever to be, the most fair legal system ever devised etc. They will ignore the facts of every day life and instead grasp to fairytales because it makes them feel better.

The laws apply the same to everyone. The only difference is that the wealthy can afford better lawyers.

I realize all too well just how the system works and realize that certain groups, creeds, races, nationalities, etc. sometimes get judged, treated and or handled differently for the same offense committed, still not fair or correct. It will probably never change, that's just the way it is. The preferential treatment of some whereas law enforcement or the judicial system looks the other way or on the other hand throws the proverbial book at someone due to the above mentioned groups will never be correct in my opinion. Most likely why the American Indians say " Sure you can trust the government, just ask any indian "

Hey Cody,

Are you saying law enforcement is allowing some groups to break the law while throwing the book at others?? If so, give me a break.

What legal system should be adopted? Eye for an eye? Cut off an arm for stealing?
