Posts: 410 Location: With my son on the water | Hey Guys Most of the people on here are very respectable so I know I can post this. We need to band together and get others to turn there boat lights on when they are on the water near or after dark. It wasn't the first time this has happened but this past week when we were heading in (not super fast) I almost Tee Boned a boat that was basically out in the middle without lights. We were really lucky as I was approaching the landing area so I was actually looking for this. We got our boat out first and then the boat without lights came to the landing. I walked down to the landing and kept calm and (to make a long story short) gave the guy a hand putting his boat on the trailer and then I told the gentlemen he should have his lights turned on for his and others safety. In the end he agreed but who knows if he will. I know some people will say lights attract bugs or affect fishing and that may be true to some point. But is it worth being hit by another boat? Many of you guys may have heard the story of the boat collision on LOTW (in broad day light) that totaled two boats and left one guy paralized on a respriator. So to be out at night without lights (particulary near landings and docking areas) WOW. Life Jackets are another discussion (but test yourself and jump in the water and see if you can get back into your boat), you may be surprised. HINT, don't do this by yourself. But a small rope type ladder tied to a cleat may help. The fishing is picking up, schools are all out, and the water is getting busy. Let's all be safe. Have a good day Edited by btfish 6/19/2014 4:23 AM

Posts: 5874 | Pretty sure that would be a law in most states, and Canada, aside from just being common sense. I put a white sock over my anchor light. Cuts the glare, but can still be seen from a long way.

Posts: 791 Location: WI | As shep said in WI it is law and I was just talking to a guy while fishing the other night who was in an accident about 5 years ago where he collided with a boat that didn't Have its lights on. The guy turned them on after and told the cops and DNR that he did. He ended up getting fined and had to pay for damages. I know bugs can be bad but it's the law and I sure don't want a 40mph Speer T- boning me. Edited by Trophyseeker50 6/20/2014 4:14 PM

Posts: 159 | Running light and life jackets.....Agreed everyone in our Musky community should be leaders in this......but we are not..... Seems like common sense to me----always have both on at night-- Just an invitation for disaster being out at night without lights and a life vest... I realize lots of guys are resistant to both.....in fact I have never fished with anyone else ever---who wears a flotation device......shocking....and lots of others turn running lights off.... But if you don't want to wear a vest or turn your lights on---- if you are not concerned about your safety ....think about your loved ones and how they would take the news if you died in a boating accident---or the people in the other boat that died in a boating accident....

Posts: 555 Location: Tennessee | From some of the boaters I've saw this summer already, I'd be suprised if they know how to even turn on their lights, much less only neglect them

Posts: 134 | The body of water I normally fish is loaded with kayakers. On many occasions heading into the launch at night ive almost run a few over "putting" in because they don't have any lights or headlamps. I always keep my ears open as obviously they start screaming and yelling at you. I don't actively cast with lights on but if I hear any boat motor the lights are quickly turned on and a flash or 2 is given from my spotlight.
