| So when we Muskie fish my husband catches a ton more fish then me and we fish all day long... and fish in the right spots most times. Seen some nice follows... mid day slow fishing or stop to eat lunch I throw a sucker out *puts hands up* and I have caught three nice fish by pure luck while he continues casting. 3 nice fish as in nicer then any he has caught.
SOOO while he is unhappy I shrug and say right place and right time and they are skis you never know.
It is his birthday tomorrow. Plan to get up at 3 am and hit Moose Lake ALL day. He wants a nice fish no matter how he fishes for them....advice what to use at night and how to change up where we are fishing.... mind you here storms end tonight and up to 80 degrees tomorrow. I REALLY want him to catch a nice one... seems BAD luck as when he takes others fishing.... including me everyone else gets them and he is throwing good baits.... |

Location: north metro, MN | Being you are his wife and tomorrow is his birthday I would say my advice would be best tried on another day rather then his birthday. That being said if this pattern continues, where the person in the back of the boat seems to be catching the fish and it is happening to the point where it is no longer a fluke, then that simply means it is not a fluke.
So go to work on fixing the problem, which has to be with something he is doing, or not doing. Like you had said, muskies can only be predicted so far. Not every time is the person in the front of the boat going to bring that right lure with the right presentation by the fish that wants to eat. Sometimes the person in the back of the boat gets the fish, sometimes they get 2 fish, sometimes they could get a 6 pack of fish and it could just be coincidence. Like you said there comes a point when it is no longer coincidence. If you and him are truly at that point then I would think there is one thing to remove from the equation. Either put him in the back of the boat or have him go out alone once. It could take the part of the equation off his mind that is causing him to miss opportunities, which in turn get passed to the other person in the boat. He may be up there casting, reeling in and doing his 8 on auto pilot mode thinking about the next spot, next lure, or how better to position the boat so that both people can throw out productive casts etc. etc. That would be my best guess. Something is distracting him. Having him fish alone once or twice should reset his mind and put him back into “muskie mode” and help him remember to simply put the boat within casting distance of the spot and then all the other focus goes in to simply fishing the spot and focusing on each and every cast.
As for any advice I could give you on tomorrow, maybe put him in the back of the boat where he has nothing to think about other then focusing on each of his casts. Or fish each spot twice before moving on to the next one that way he wont be asking himself “where to next” on that first time through a spot. Or have him pick out one bucktail, one jerkbait and one topwater and that’s all he can throw that entire day. That would stop him from sitting in the front of the boat thinking “what lure should I clip on that will get them to go.” Remember though all this stuff would be a waste of time or just down right silly if he truly isn’t doing something to cause the person in the back of the boat to catch 80% of the fish.

| Didn't know you were on MN Muskie fishing.... good advice... he does switch lures a lot which I have mentioned is missed casts. .. I tend to stick to my favorite lures and be glued to them. One of which is a jimmy which I get a ton of hits on and nice fish but the hook up rate sucks..... I have switched from that lure.... I go with odds and stick with it. Lately been using one of his home made lures.... he says why do you only throw that lure of mine? Easy answer we have caught the most fish on it and had some nice follows... just boated one yesterday on it which will share but little tyke... used in a spot a 40 plus fish followed on it earlier. |

| BTW on the way to the lake now...... I said wake up 2 am.... he decided 4 am I hope we do not completely miss morning bite... ahh well |

| Moose Lake didn't pan out so bad... saw three nice follows but they didn't want to stay for the figure 8 or come back to play... caught a couple tiny tykes and 35 inch northern. Tried Deer lake slow and not much for weed growth yet. I did have a nice one on in darker bay so I didn't see the fish but by teeth marks on lure *whistles*.... may need to go back for that one.... |
