hey guys I plan on fishing st. clair on the Canadian side near mid july. ive never fished the lake but noticed most people fish away from shore and more into the lake. are these fish relating to structure or just roaming around. I enjoy casting for musky over trolling aswell. any tips on locating these fish for a st. clair first timer? thanks

Think migratory fish that act like open water striped bass rather traditional 'static' lake like conditions. Go on YouTube and look up 'casting the Bondy bait' to see how it can be approached. It will give you a good look at fishing the area in question. Good luck!

The trollers are fishing mid lake because that's where most of the shad is at in the middle of summer. If you don't have a boat capable of being out there then you'll be stuck near shore like me.

What size boat is required to safely fish mid lake? I have a new 1750 fish hawk

I would go out there with that boat on the calmer days.

The wind picks up fast and creates 4 footers which are no fun so any size boat.

I have been out there in 4's with my 1750 but its rough. Just pay attention to the wind and make your launch decisions accordingly. The one nice thing about the 1750 is that you can run 19-25mph in the rough stuff and ride the waves and not hammer them.

Which ramp would you guys recommend using next weekend? Not looking for anybody's spots just what general area of the lake to start.WE would prefer to cast over trolling.

Are you launching from the Michigan side or Ontario?

On the Michigan side there's the DNR ramp at the end of South River Rd. (Harley Ensign at the mouth of the Clinton River) & there's the DNR ramp on Jefferson Ave. (S. of Crocker) known locally as the Crocker Ramp (Clinton River Cutoff Ramp).

If you'll be launching on the weekend don't bother with the Crocker ramp because it's a cluster bleep at the ramp coming back in.

Again, look at wind direction. That can tell you where to launch. There is a website that has most of the launches on it. Do not think you can just go and launch from the same location every time in a standard musky rig. You will be sorry.

^ this.... You can't really make those decisions in advance, often need to be made the night before or that morning.

I had a weekend where I launched at the Clinton river cutoff one day, had to go to belle river the next and the third day my best option was Algona. That's alot of driving but when you have big winds and big wind direction changes, you are forced to make these decisions.

another thing to seriously consider is the wind and the rivers. The biggest waves I have been through out there, legit 5fters were in the st Claire river. If a big wind is blowing against the current the river will get really rough. An angle or cross isn't so bad but direct against she will roll up nasty.
