I already have a 9' St-Croix rod setup with a 400B reel. This is my main big bait + trolling rod.

Now I also picked up a 7 foot Sojourn heavy musky rod for more jerk bait style fishing. I'm interested in pairing this with a 300 Daiwa Lexa reel. What speed reel should I be looking at? I'm assuming that a 7' outfit is better suited to fishing hellhounds, top raiders, early season crank baits, jerkbaits, sledges, (no9-bucktails?), etc.? If that is the case, what speed lexa_300 should I be looking at for all of the above?

If your using this primarily for jerk baits I would go with a high speed reel. I also use a 7 footer for my jerk and glide baits and us a revo toro 6.4 gear. I prefer the faster reel to pick up the slack quickly. I however use an 8.5 foot rod for my top water baits. Think you should be using your longer rod with the 400b for just about everything you listed other than jerk, glide or any other pull baits.

I use a Calcutta TE for every thing except for pounder's and big double blades for those i use the Tranx HG and PG.i don't get caught up in line pick up or speed. If it's a good reel its a good reel. But but the best you can afford.

Since your main combo has a 400b I would look at the high speed lexa. It will work great for your jerk baits maybe not so good for top raider. Consider throwing the top raider on your 9' SC with Calcutta.

''high speed'' = regular 6.3 lexa?

The 6.3 gear would work well for what you are asking of it. I tried a 7.3:1 reel last year for jerk baits and found it was too fast (had too much line pick up for what I was doing). Use a 6.4:1 NaCl for this now, and all is fine. Each reel is different. Compare the amount of line per turn for each of the ratio's you're looking at. Good luck.

And for jerk baits/gliders I would go with a double paddle handle vs the big single knob power handle, but to each his own. The 6.3 version would be better in my opinion (than 7.3)
