So for those of you who do not know. The city of Mound had some flooding last week and a bunch of waste backed up into their homes around that area. The city decided that it was best to let it drain from peoples homes into lake Minnetonka. Right now the lake IS contaminated. Anyone who fishes it, swims in it or simply boats on it, runs the potential risk of contracting E-coli. I've had it. and I can tell you it is the worst pain I have ever experienced. not to mention the 2 week stay at the hospital of which I remember vaguely, only to get the bill and be in even more pain.

I talked to some DNR guys and a sheriff on Monday about the waste in the lake. They told me it would be best to just not even go on it at all. You never know what fish will have, then you catch and touch it. Then you smell the slime and accidentally touch your lip... well now you're EFFED..

So just wanted to send this tip to anyone not aware so, if need be, you can choose to go to a different lake and avoid the risk... or maybe because of the risk, Tonka will be less crowded. I did hear a few surrounding lakes had the issue as well. not sure what those are...sorry.

Have a good opener everyone. I will not be fishing Tonka this weekend. I am going to hit Indy, Eagle, and Waconia.

You can catch e coli from the slime off a fish? I guess you learn something everyday. Thanks for the heads up Fatski.

Honestly I don't know for sure if you would be affected by just touching a fish... But if you think about it, they're swimming in it, then you touch them...... I know that fish can give people cold sores just by touching them if you have a bad reaction. or other things. Just saying, I've had it, and you don't want it. I would not wish it upon my worst enemy. Not even close to worth the risk for me. I wont fish that lake for the rest of the year if that is what it takes.... but I really hope that is not what it takes

Not the same...

When you have raw sewage that was not treated and was dumped into a lake... it's a lot different.

Could be worse. You could own one of those multi million dollar homes on the lake. Go down to your dock and sees a turd go floating by.

I know every normal running wastewater treatment facility "dumps", I prefer the term discharges effluent with E-coli in it. While it may not be as strong (healthy wise both in strength and numbers) as raw sewage, there is never the less E-coli being discharged.

E-col testing is done because its an good indicator of how well the wastewater plant is effectively killing all pathogens with Cl2 (chlorine) or O2 (ozone from UV light). With a straight discharge of raw sewage, there are other pathogens that can make you sick. That said many pathogens don't live long outside a host (human body). A greater effect may come later when the sun warms the water and the algae fed by the nutrients from the raw sewage discharge, kicks the bloom into high gear, unless there is a good flow going through the lake to "flush" out the nutrients downstream.

They will be handing out tickets like candy at the home town parade...and most of the people won't have a clue about the ordinance change.

Big electronic signs at every access now. The evening crowd heading to fletchers were still on plane last night. Word will spread today. Haven't seen a single wake this morning.
