I have been having a problem with my new NaCL, looking for thoughts/opinions.

When I cast the spool frequently engages if the powerhandle is in any type of upward position. The momentum of the cast is causing the handle to move forward engaging the spool. This causes some awful sounding gear grinding and is obviously horrible for the reel.

If I make sure the powerhandle is in the 6 o'clock position there are not any issues. It seems more than a little inconvenient to re-adjust the powerhandle to the downward position prior to every cast.

Buy a super cranker handle. These are larger throw handles but have two grips. This does the same thing as a power handle but you have two grips so you don't miss it when you go to grab it and they are balanced so the accidental engaging thing doesn't happen. I like the ones with cork handle.

Keep the thumbar pressed down until the bait hits the water.  It's impossible for the reel to engage if the thumbar is pressed down.

--- this is a fairly common problem with power handles that have one big (heavy) knob ,,,, find a double paddle (knob) replacement handle and things will improve --

Unless you want to be spending more money, and want to have to fiddle with the handle position, take Tyler's suggestion and just hold the thumb bar down during the cast. Problem solved.

You shouldn't have to do anything to avoid a high end reel from engaging too early. As far as it being a problem more so with the power handle......It comes from Abu with a power handle, it should work properly with it. ***NOTE*** I only use Abu reels and I have for my entire life. I love their products, this is just an opinion on premature engagement.

I just encountered this issue over the weekend. The power handle is not counter balanced like the other power handles. Just the weight of the handle is causing this, the knob is pretty light. I am going to try holding down the spool release, which is going to be tough because I switch hands during the end of the cast..... Might be looking for the double paddle handle. Sucks, I really liked that power handle.

move the handle to the other hole postion on the reel. It will still provide a lot of torque yet it wont engage like it would on the furthest out position.

The difference between the double paddle provided and power handle is very minimal. Try setting the power handle on the inside hole if it's the grip you like. Also, make sure when you cast your wrist is square with the handle side of the reel facing down, you will cast further and easier with allot less arm motion and the handle won't engage very often no matter which reel or power handle you are using.

Try rotating your wrist so that the handle points down towards the ground. You should be doing this to limit wrist fatigue.

My cast is a cluster, too many years of should have had a left handed baitcaster.

I cast right hand, but reel right hand. (Spinning is cast right, reel left. go figure).
So the rod moves to my left arm during or at cast end. I am trying to picture how I can twist the reel to handle down.

I even tried modifying the Revo Toro power handle (with the counter weight) to have the NaCL knob, no luck getting that to fit. The double handle is 43 bucks. ouch.

Thats pretty normal I think. I have casted like that for 15 years and never wanted to change.

I forgot some actually switch hands while casting. Disregard my previous advise. Sorry.

100% agree. Best handles I've ever used! I like the cork ones, too.

One of my friends owns a 60 "salty" ( he calls so it because NACL is the salt's chemical formula ) and he has installed on it a Revo Toro power handle ( but you can install a standard power handle with the rubber knob too ) instead that the power handle he has found inclused in the box.

And here I thought I was the only one with this problem....Yes that grinding sound make my hair stand up. Lots of good sugestions....It usally happens when I am not paying attention, and fail to push the button down completly. After that I say outloud "push button down...cast...retreive". It might happen once an outing...but getting better. Love that power handle also...make me think of an old sausage grinder once & a while

I've found that, if I cast keeping the handle side of the reel pointing skyward, it prevents it. Even when I'm not paying attention.
