Got a bulk spool of 80 lb suffix and putting new line on all my baitcasters.

Does anyone see a problem of Not using mono backing and just putting a solid piece of electrical tape over the knot of braid and around the spool... so it doesnt slip???

I do this with all my spinning reels for walleye fishing (10lb power pro) and have never had one slip on the spool.

A rubberband works as a spool backing as well.

The reason many dont want to fill the spool up with braid is because a lot would be wasted (the middle section). If you want to spend (some say waste) money, by all means have at it. Its your money.

Been taping mine since I started using braid... no problems. Well, the only problem was several years ago when I realized it needed tape! My biggest spool is 175yd, though.

I use a simple slip knot, tighten it down to the spool and then cover the knot with a 1/4" x 1/2" sliver of electrical tape. It's worked fine for years.

X 2....Do same thing on my spinning rod as well. Never had line slip.

I use a short amount of mono backing and a long section of braid on the first go. Then after a year of use and a year of cutting and trimming I pull the line off, add a longer piece of backing and then do the 180 trick with the braid. That way I still get a good full spool after the 180.

i put on 100 yds. of braid on all my reels. never ran low. why waste the extra just to sit there. i use cheap mono to fill the spool under the braid. never a problem and saves me $$$$$$$.

Same as LarryO. This wastes the fewest amount of line. When you get down to the length of a bomb cast, replace the line.

What you don't want is to build up tape to take up space on the spool. The tape doesn't go on evenly when you place layers on and the spool will vibrate when casting and reeling. So use mono or dacron backing or fill the entire spool up with braid after placing a single or two layers of tape on the spool arbor.
