I am new to bait painting and just recieved my first setup. I am looking to start playing with colors and have been reading a lot of information out there and have some questions.

Firts, I bought Createx Paint, is that a good quality? Will I have issues in my airbrush?

Second, I bought Opaque paint, should I consider some Transparent as well? When do I use one versus the other?

Third, do I need any additives? I purchased some cleaner to help between colors and final cleanup for the night but what about something like a "reducer"? It is supposed to help thin any thick paint so you can work at lower pressure or not plug/splatter... Is that worth buying?

Finally, when you guys mix up a color do you just make a small amount in the gravity feed cup or suction cup or do you tend to make a larger quantity? I only plan on doing a handful of baits at a time so I was planning on mixing in the gravity cup for now...

Thanks in advance!

Paul

This is the setup I purchased so hopefully the airbrush quality is decent enough for me to start...

Welcome to the madness Paul!
Createx will work fine.....opaques, transparents, metallics, pearls, and interference colors all have there place. My advice is to get a few transparents and then learn your brush and how to properly reduce your paints, I make my own reducer, (PM me if your interested). Opaques have more pigment and will cover better, work from light to dark ( opposite if using interference paint). Transparents have less pigment and are more "transparent" most often used to enhance other colors or subtle effects, like over foil for example.
Learning to use your brush and compressor is critical....a lot of trial and error in the equation. I mix /reduce my paint prior to adding it to the brush.
Good luck, the level of expertise on this site is unmatched and I'm sure others will chime in to help. Any other questions, I'm also in the Madison area.
Best,

I agree with MuskyLip....the hands on experience is the best way to answer all your Qs!

Heres where I would start.

- Start at 20 to 25 psi for coverage and blending of base colors.
- drop it down to 10 to 15 for fine details like stripes, dots or bars etc.
- Don't dilute the paint at all until you come across a color you feel needs diluting. (I only dilute metallics)
- Start with a nice clean white canvas, your color will "Pop" much more.
- I use Createx, its good quality paint....been moving to more economical paints picking and choosing which I like...I have even experimented with diluting acrylic paints and some work very well and are WAY cheaper.
- Keep your airbrush clean! Cannot stress this enough....clean thoroughly in between color changes also...warm water works well for that....

GOOD LUCK!!
