Does anyone really know what the difference is between IM 6,7,8 graphite blanks?

I was looking at two rods the other day made by the same mfg. one was IM7 the other IM8 graphite. The IM 8 was $10 more (no big deal) and seemed to be a little more stiff in terms of action.

I am wondering if this a quality designation? Does brand X IM7 meet the same standards as brand Y and Z ?

Thanks in advance

Mark,
From my understanding, the IM6 etc. designation refers to the modulous. A few years ago there was a tremendous race among the manufacturers for higher modulous which meant lighter/ faster rods, but what they found was the higher the modulous, the more brittle the rods became. These rods were light and sensitive, but were not very durable.I've been out of the business for a few years and don't remember all the specifics. Hope this helps. Steve

Hiya,
May be a long answer but I'm bored, so have the time... Also been a while since I learned all this stuff so particulars may be a little fuzzy but the gist of it should be accurate...

Modulous is basically a measure of how a tube being bent behaves - rods are a tapered tube but still basically a tube. When a tube is bent, the top of the bend has to extend and the botto compress, and modulous measures the level of tolerance for those things before the tube collapses. A drinking straw, for example, is a very high modulous object - you can't bend it much before it collapses. A $24.99 cheap glass rod is a very low modulous - you can wrap it around a tree and it won't collapse.

What modulous means in rod materials is also affected by the other stuff in a rod blank - what kind of resin, the scrim material, etc., plus the blank design - the diameter of the blank and the thickness of the blank walls, and the taper. So two IM7 rods might be totally different in terms of durability, weight, etc. Modulous numbers are references to the grade of graphite material, but don't tell you much about the rod itself. You can have a low modulous rod that's great, and a high modulous rod that's total crap because of all the other factors involved.

Hope this helps...
