Posts: 1000 | Hi guys, I'm going to be adding side imaging this year and would like your input. Which would you get and why? 1197c SI $1299 998c HD SI $1299 998c SI $1100 Will only be looking at Humminbird. Would love to get some input from people who have used these systems. 900 series is perfectly fine for me, but saw a great deal on an 1197 so I'm considering that as well. Thanks!

Posts: 61 | I don't remember if the 1197 has the same backlight in the screen like the new ones do, but I would go that route. I had the 998c SI, and have since upgraded to the 1198. If I were you, and were already at $1299, spend the extra $600 and get a 1198 for around $1800. That's what I did. There's no comparison to the 2 sizes, especially when trying to view side imaging and mapping at once. If you cant swing the extra cash for the big boy, go with the 998HD. The 998c would definitely be my last choice.

Posts: 58 | BSG is spot on. try to get the biggest newest unit you can't quite afford. you'll be happier in the long run. the newer units are more compatible with new technology as it rolls out. with that said, If you plan on networking it at all or adding a minn kota with i link or something then go with the 900 units. the 1197 doesn't have a ethernet port. while the 900's do. the 1197 and the 998c have the same screen with no back lighting the HD unit is the backlit one. back lighting is what makes the unit HD. the resolution and pixels are the same. the screen is easier to see in direct sunlight. if 1299 is your top end get a 999 a quick google search will reveal several retailers selling the newest units at that price point. or you can patrol various classifieds and auction sites for deals on 1198's. have recently seen them going for anywhere between 1500 up to 1800. a little north of your price point but the big screens are absolutely worth it. after going to 1100's i can never go back.

Posts: 1000 | Thanks you guys. $1300 is the absolute top end of my price range so it looks like I'll be going with a 900 series HD. Maybe in 2-3 years I'll be able to upgrade to 1100 series, but for the moment I have a couple loans and a ring fund to take care of

Posts: 62 Location: Northwest WI | I have, and still use, an older 897SI and 997 SI. Last year I added an 1198. They all do a great job. Given the choices originally posted I'd go with the 1197...hands down. The 897 and 997 are highly capable units in their own right and I don't find any loss of functionality because they're not HD. This said, I very quickly appreciated the larger screen of the 1100 series. HB has a great software update program that will update the 1197 programming. This won't make it HD but all other capabilities will be updated. HD is nice to have...but to my mind the larger screen size trumps HD. Keith
