Me and my wife are possibly lookin to move just over the border to Wi in the near future and someone had told her that you have to pay a personal property tax for every vehicle and boat you own, every other year. I am not talking about registration or license plate fees and I am aware that boat trailers do not have license plates in Wi- is there such a thing as I am not finding any info on the subject - hoping a few Wi residents will chime in on this question - Thanks for any info.

You pay tax on the purchase price when you get the item registered in your name. That is the only time you pay the state other than licensing fees which I think are very reasonably priced.

Just the sales tax when you purchase. I have not moved to Wisconsin so it is possible that there might be some kind of tax to register it the first time in Wisconsin but no sure.

Also, just for clarification... you do not have to put a plate on a trailer if the total weight of the trailer and load (boat, motor, trailer and all equipment carried within) does not exceed 3000 lbs. If the total weight is over 3000 you will need a plate. Also, the trailer will need to be titled in your name regardless of the weight. Title is different than registration.

I think that tax would apply if you moved into WI and lived in a travel trailer or houseboat as your residence.

There is no personal property tax in WI.

IN has personal property tax where you pay a yearly tax on the value of your personal property like boats, motorcycles, and autos, etc.

Drat, you caught us. All of us Sconnies are in cahoots on this thread.

Looks like a document for businesses who do have to claim personal property but I bet you knew that.

As Shep stated, there is no personal property tax in WI in the way that the word personal literally means an individual person(s) and their cars, boats, motorcycles, etc. No worries for the orignal post/question.

But, BUSINESS personal property is subject to tax in WI, based on annual reporting and calculation utilizing conversion factor and depreciated values of the assets.....oh yeah, something like: http://www.dor.state.wi.us/forms/govtvc/pa-003.pdf

There are certain exemptions that apply. Personal property for a business would include equipment, office furniture and equipment, cars/trucks purchased and used by the business......in effect, anything that isn't "nailed down." As always, check with your local CPA for exact detail. Really.

Thanks for the jump start, Jeff78

Whatever tax you pay in Wisconsin is worth it cuz you get an NFL team with it. Of course I don't know if meant IL or MN but either would be the case.
