| I was wondering if a few of you guys could make a general list of the "don'ts" of muskie fishing. Like don't use a plain snap for a glide, use a split ring, when not to fish a certain depth/area, etc.
Thanks

| If you have a really good partner, DON'T LET HIM HAVE THE FRONT OF THE BOAT UNLESS IT'S HIS BIRTHDAY AND ONLY THEN IF HE WAS BORN ON LEAPYEAR. |
|
| |
|
| Don't let your line get wrapped around the tip of your rod with a 45 inch musky thrashing by the boat! I lost the fish, the nine inch Suick, and broke the tip all at once! Oh, the $3.00 jerkbait leader as well! [:blackeye:] |
|

|
| Never forget your net, use or make good leaders, never grab a steel leader with you bare hand with a good size fish on, make sure your hooks are sharp and set the hook more than once when you have a fish on! These are some of the mistakes we have made so far and I am sure we will make more.

| ...never forget you camera (doh!!), never take out the camera until you see the fish is hooked well. Never lend you favorite lure to your partner. Always use your partners favorite lure. Always have at least 3 sets of pliers in the boat. Never forget you oars(Doh!!!), always check your gas guage when trolling (see Oars comment)....and thats about it....
good luck |

|
| My #1 rule--> Don't encroach on other's- respect their right to be on the water. I personally stay at least 100 yds or more away from anyone- If someone has a spot they're working and I want to fish it, I'll come back later. []

| Don`t ever hit the trolling motor switch when your bait or your partners is within 15' of the boat.
Always have your cutters etc. in arms reach and make sure everyone in the boat knows where they are and what you`ll need.
Be prepared for anything to happen on any cast.
Always be in a good position to set the hook.
Don`t forget that boat positioning is critical....even after the fish is hooked. I`ve seen too many things go wrong because one guy in the boat just watches the action while he and his partner drift into a thick weedbed, stumpfield, etc. Keep your composure and help in the fight by keeping the boat out of trouble. |

| Don't spend hundreds of dollars on the best rod and reel that you can and then buy the cheapest non-ball bearing snap
swivel that you can find. You are creating your own weakest link!
Don't wait until after the next cast to cut and retie your line or touch up and sharpen your hooks!
Don't fail to figure 8 just because you haven't seen a muskie all day!
Don't forget to back off your reel's drag at the end of the day!
That fish of a lifetime only shows up once, the more little things that you can take care of, the more chance that you can get that fish into the net!
And most importantly, DON'T FORGET to thank God for another great day on the water. After the terrible events most recently, Only God knows if it will be our last day ever!!!!!

| Don't ever take a chance at unkooking a bait from a fish with your hands. ALWAYS use a pliers no matter how easy it looks like it is to remove! I learned my lesson when I had one hook of a suick hooked to a fiesty 36" fish and anouther hook in my finger. Needless to say it doesn't feel good when the fish thrashes around hooked to your finger! But whiskey eased the pain[:blackeye:] |

|
| Don't let your brother use your pliers and not put them back. Same as above, hooked to a musky because I had to unhook it by hand. Ended the day and a trip to the emergency room.
I agree whole heartedly with esox maniac. Poor edicate really gets my blood boiling be it another fisherman, skier, powerboater or jet skier. |

| Dont hire a guide to learn a lake and take your no good brother in law with you to ease the price of the guide.
The guide will spend two hours of the half day trip teaching your brother in law how to cast and pick backlashes. That doesnt leave much time to learn the lake.

Dont fish a tournament with Steve Worrall if you plan on catching fish. The muskie god does not take too kindly to Worrall fishing tournaments. LOL[]
But I am sucker and I am going to fish the third tournament this year with him, the Smokeys invite on Pewaukee this weekend. God help us.[]

Dont kill the transmisson in your truck.
Dont bang your knee on the hitch of your truck. (It swells up and hurts real bad)
All in the last two weeks for me.

| When fishing alone always have the net out and withing arms reach. When moving from one spot to the next always remember to stow the net so you won't have to buy a new one. As Steve said, don't forget to back your drag off at the end of the day. What Steve forgot to say, don't forget to tighten your drag before you make your first cast. Always be aware of what others are doing around you and don't cut people off. Don't use cheap leaders. Don't be cheap and keep using an expensive leader after it needs to be replaced. Learn to tie your own leaders. Don't use dull hooks. Don't fly down a lake you're not familar with. Don't try to duplicate what others on the lake are doing unless you know they are on to fish. Don't get stuck doing what worked last week. |
|

|
| For the non-vertically challenged people.... don't bump your shin on the trailer hitch as it probably hurts more than your knee.
Don't be a bull headed SOB like me and procrastinate converting to using split rings instead of snaps on your leaders. Cost me a tournament and a VERY nice fish this past weekend (I do have a cool story to tell though).
Don't stop frequenting the muskie boards as a wealth of useful information is shared on a daily basis.
Don't quit fishing until ice-up!!!!!!!!

| When you are up at the North Woods. Dont go to the Weasels all nude review with Jack Daniels if you are planning to get up early. I learned that last weekend. [:knockout:]
Oh ya... Dont throw in a big dip of kodiak if there is no out house at the launch. [:(] |

| Hi,
Not exactly concrete, but here''s my list of don''ts:
- Don''t spend all your time searching for difinitive answers to questions about muskies and muskie fishing. If the question is more sophisticated than ''which end of the rod do I hold?'' there aren''t any. As soon as you think you have a difinitive answer, muskies will flip, turn, transmorgriphy, and generally bust ass to prove you wrong. Keep an open mind.
- Learn all you can from magazines ( - plug - subscribe to Esox Angler [;)] - plug -) books, message boards, seminars and videos, but when you are on the water, don''t forget to follow your own gut, and never discount your own instincts. If the guy giving the seminar says use a bucktail, but a jerkbait just feels right to you at the time, try the jerkbait. You can learn a lot from others, but in the long run, developing your own instincts will serve you better, and the only way to develop them is to follow them and see where they lead.
- Don''t let anyone tell you that you''re fishing something ''wrong.'' I''ve seen muskies caught on trolled topwaters, vertical jigged bucktails, dead-sticked spoons and Suicks cranked in as fast as the angler could turn the reel handle. Fish don''t read the backs of bait packages - experiment.
- Don''t forget why we do this. Muskie fishing is fun, but it''s all too easy to take the fun out of it by worrying about numbers - numbers of fish, number of inches, number of hours between strikes, number of horses pushing your boat, number of lures, rods or whatever. Numbers don''t matter. Fun does.
Cheers,

| Do not let an inexperienced right handed person cast from you left. You'll end up with 12 stiches in the side of your head.

| Always make sure your partner has his hand through the lanyard of the Boga Grip. I have had two end up on the bottom of the lake in the last five years, that gets a bit pricey............... |
|
| |
|
| Dont let Ben Remer touch the rod!
Dont aswer big fish questions!
Dont role over and pat her on the behind and say ..I guesS we should pack it in and head home! cause her answer wil be ...YOU ARE AT HOME!
Dont beleive everything you read!
Do enjoy yourself and be safe when you are out there.
