Location: New Jersey | 2003 Johnson 50HP 4 stroke, up always works, down works intermittently. I can hear the click from the solenoid (I think its a solenoid). I have read that the green wire is the down one. So, I am trying to figure out if the solenoid is bad, so I want to switch them and see if the up becomes the problem. Here is a picture of what I am calling solenoids.
Question, can I just pull the leads off and put them on different solenoids? Or do I have to remove both solenoids and reverse them. Also, dumb question, but do I have to disconnect the battery first?
thanks, Rob

Location: Central Wisconsin | You won't need to disconnect the battery, just pull out the pair of solenoods and switch them around. I'm sure that is the problem.
I have a similar motor in a '95 version 2 stroke, and had to do the same thing last year. Funny thing is, sometimes it will act up and I can switch the solenoids around and get it to work. Even though I sometimes put in the solenoid that originally was "bad". Anyone have any idea what else could cause that?
