Posts: 300 Location: Minocqua, WI | Is there an easy way to extend length of rod handle by means other than rod building? I recently received a few rods as gifts. I like them, but problem is the cork handles of both are about 4-6 inches too short for my liking. A few folks suggested I saw off the existing handles, replace with the blank and longer handle of a spare or broken rod (assuming it's of same diameter), epoxy it together, and extend length that way. If I remember correctly, I may or may not have seen an actual product sold that caps over the existing handle, and artificially extends rod handle length that way. Yes or no, right or wrong, I don't know nor remember.... But something like this should exist. Maybe it does, and I can't find it. Thoughts? Help or ideas are appreciated.

Posts: 246 Location: Grand Marais, MN | depends on how crafty you feel you are. You and anyone can do it and make it perfectly functional, it just may not look as pretty as if someone who does it all the time does it. you got the idea right, saw off butt tip to expose the end of the blank, shove a piece of blank in there to the desired length and affix with epoxy, finish with some new cork rings (may need to buy this new) and finish up the cork as best as you are able. A fun project for some, but on the other hand I dont think it is too expensive to have some of the custom builders do it for you, and they can make it look perfect.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | If you want to cut the entire handle off you can buy long EVA handles from mudhole.com and then they look OK. If you build on cork rings you need some equipment to finish the handle correctly or it will not look good. I have tried to spin on a belt sander to round the handle out (vs a lathe) and it just does not work well at all. Looks like a 4 yr old did it That rod of mine has rod wrap on it now and looks fine. Go with a rod builder and you will be much happier.

Posts: 251 | Not sure if this is something you might like but could potentially be interesting. I just wonder if it would be undersized for a musky rod. Could make storage a bit easier. http://www.mudhole.com/Rod-Building/Grips-Handles/Manley-Rods-Adjus... If anyone else has seen these or looked into it I would be interested in what you have to say about how it would be suited for a musky rod. If I remember, Thorne Bros. used to offer something like this on some of their rods.

That's what I do. Depending on how old the cork on the rod is it looks pretty good. Order the cork so the diameter is somewhat larger than what the end of the existing handle is so it can be sanded to match. Properly fitting the blank inside the rod handle is key to ensure the handle doesn't crack. I like to run the blank up the rod so that it ends under the reel seat so the whole handle is reinforced.
