Posts: 1046 | Wally, my wife used for several years the Shimano Sedona 4000 with great success,in fact mailed it back to Shimano it got totally rebuilt after 4 seasons(for free) and I now have it set-up for wally crank`in for myself as she now baitcasts! For 49.99 can`t go wrong, with that type warranty. It worked good for us! Handy

Posts: 260 Location: Kentucky | In the late 70's I used to fish for skies with a spinning rig. Lots of saltwater guys use spinning gear! I used a reel called DAM QUICK. It was a great reel! Don't know if they are still in business?

Posts: 1438 | DAM are still in business. I just ran across one somewhere last week. Don't know if they are built the same as before or same models or anything. Just remember running across one. German made maybe??? Scott

Posts: 259 | Any Shimano with 3 or more bearings and a 7 ft. medium heavy stick. I started out with a Spirex and have a couple Stradics that I've pounded for years with no problems. Bass Pro was selling the now discontinued Stradic 4000 for about $75.00. The new Stradics are $135.00. Either one is the smoothest spinning machine I've seen. Reliable drags.

| Yes... the Quick is German made, but according to me brother, the quality is not what is was...the Shimano Bait Runner is a good one, and can also be used if you live bait fish also; brother and I use them w/ no probs since they came out...one good thing is that the spinning reel drags are seemingly more dependable! | |||

Posts: 3928 | Not sure what to recommend because I haven't tried lots of brands, but I can offer some ideas to consider.... Instant anti-reverse is very nice, maybe a "must have". You usually can't get this feature on spinning reels that have a "trigger" that flips the bail for you. So maybe avoid trigger deals. Neither of my $100+ Quaantums, a spinning reel and a baitcaster, were durable. Nice at first but they just didn't last. I love my Pinnacle Deadbolt spinning reels, I have at least one of them in every size. I've been real impressed with them. But I don't use them to fling big baits. Because..... ....most freshwater spinning reels are designed to throw and retrieve relatively light baits. Mavmskys mentioned "saltwater" didn't he? I would think that reels designed for fairly heavy saltwater applications are the place to start looking for a freshwater musky reel. just some ideas to consider - I'm sure no expert

| If you go saltwater version, check out the Penns, and Diawa Emblems in the 4500/5000 are daggone good reels; Emblems are around $120.00, but well worth it. The trick is to find one that will last, and can also be a multi purpose reel too. The Shimano Bait Runner will also fit the bill... | |||
