I've only fished Vilas Co lakes a couple times so I'm not familiar with the area. When he talks about fishing open water fish, do the lakes there all have ciscos in them?

You won't find them in the shallower weedy lakes up there.

You won't find them in some of the deep clear lakes that used to have good populations of them either. Some of the lakes still have good populations while others don't. Started happening about 10 years ago. Nobody has a good answer as to why this has happened including the D.N.R.

How productive is the open water casting in non cisco lakes?

On some of the lakes just as good as lakes with Cisco. Remember that there are a lot of speies of forage that suspend including schools of suckers/redhorse. Don't let forage keep you from thinking it has a suspended fishery or not. There are several non-cisco based lakes that I will fish suspended on before I fish cisco based lakes suspended.

Ciscos do not indicate it will be an easy suspended fishery to tap just as suckers/pannies do not indicate it will not have a suspended fishery.

It can still be very productive. On a couple of my "home lakes" the bluegills and crappies will commonly suspend out over the deeper water, and obviously the muskies follow them. Best part of all is I can go almost all year without seeing more than maybe one or two other boats casting these areas.

i agree with smada...i do a lot of open water fishing on lakes that dont have ciscoes and do pretty well. perch and bluegills schools are what im chasing around and they can be anywhere. Normally dont find to many in open water in the spring because they are shallower, but by july to the end of the season you can find fish suspended in open water.
