Posts: 47 Location: The Land of Lincoln | Can some of you veteran Musky folks do a quick product review for a novice such as myself? I've been looking all winter to buy a new jerkbait rod and I've finally got it narrowed down to two rods. I've heard that both are fine rods and they are the same price. Could you guys (and gals) please offer your vote and comments about you preferences? The St. Croix Premier 6' and The Allstar Big Game 6'3" Thanks so much! mclarkin777

Posts: 1906 Location: Oconto Falls, WI | I don't do a whole lot of jerkbait fishing, but here is my take. Go with a little bit longer rod than a 6' or 6'3". I wouldn't go any shorter than 6'6", and that is even too short for me. The short rod may be nice for working a bait, but it sucks for keeping fish on. The longer the rod you can get away with the better. I have used my 7'7" rod with jerkbaits, and it worked just fine for working the bait.

Posts: 484 Location: St. Louis, MO., Marco Is., FL, Nestor Falls, ON | I agree with Cisco. Six foot is just too short. I think 7' is the size to use. Of course what kind of boat you are fishing out of makes a difference, too. The higher you are off the water, the longer rod you can effectively use.

Posts: 328 Location: MN | Is 6 foot too short? Depends on how tall you are? I know alot of guys who use 6 foot jerbait rods, but then again, the are 5'8" - 5-10" tall. The formentioned 6'6" - 7" is probably the perfect length. Alot of guys are using real long rods these days, I can't use those beasts...My longest is 7'2" and that is just perfect!

Posts: 129 Location: Bemidji, MN- | The trend in rods today is toward toward longer. That said, I didn't have room for any more long rods in my boat when it came time to buy a jerkbait rod, so I bought a 6' St. Croix Premier Heavy Action and like it quite well. I find it easier to give the jerkbait a really good rip than with a longer, heavier rod.

Location: Illinois-Indiana | McLarkin777, They guys have it right, your best bet is to go with the 6'9" St. Croix I used a 6' and now would not trade in my 6'9" for anything. The rod is so versital and the little longer rod will aid in hooksets, I even use mine to troll with in the propwash. My 6'9" is my jerkbait rod and also topwter walk the dog lures. Try a 6'9" you wont be disappointed.

Posts: 617 Location: Clintonville, WI | St. Croix's products are excellent.....along with great customer service. They all seem to handle well working a bait and with fish on. I almost bought an All Star from R&H's a couple of years ago at the Milwaukee show. Felt the quality was fine but ultimately decided to go with home state St. Croix. All Star seems to be a regional choice.

Posts: 1046 | One I looked at lately was the Fig-Rig( shown to me by TY Sennet) and it was an exremely light blank, great action and shorter handle lenght(personal preference)in a 6'10" for heavy jerks.@ 159.00 I thought was a fair price,BUT the warranty was only 90 days, how come? So my quest for a heavy jerk rod is still ongoing, just seems the right one has not hit my hands yet. Anyone else have any info on the Fig`s? Handy

Posts: 114 Location: Chicago | Ralph, I think a while back I read you used a St. Croix 8' Classic Cat rod for Mag Dawgs and larger baits such as HR Shakers. Do you ever use the Classic Cat rod for other jerk or glide baits? I have about $140 to spend on a new rod and I am trying to find the best all around rod for smaller jerk and glide baits all the way up to the Mag Dawgs and HR Shakers. Hoping someone could provide some suggestions. Thanks, Dave K

Posts: 1245 Location: Madtown, WI | First...for the Jerkbaits I would go with the 6'9" t. Croix mentioned above. I have thrown small reef hawgs up to shakers with it. However, I can't stand to throw magnum BullDawgs with it!! I go with the 7"6 croix or my 8 6 all star for the big dawgs. Takes a lot of the "work" out of throwing dawgs with the longer rod. Personal opinion. Cory

Posts: 364 Location: Kentucky | I have the 6' 9" St. Croix and really like it. Great price and durable with plenty of backbone for tossing those giant belly baits. I'm spoiled having a couple Thorne Bros. bucktail rods, but I like having the strength of the St. Croix on the jerkbait rod. My brother has the 6' 10" Loomis jerkbait which he really loves, but it's more $. I think you'd be really happy with the St. Croix. Dunno anything about the All Star, so I can't help you there, but lots of folks here like their rods too.

Posts: 485 Location: On my favorite lake! | I would say get the 6ft. St. Croix. I like the 6ft. rod better for jerkbats. I use my longer rods for everything else. I feel that with a 6ft rod I have better control. If you ever played baseball you heard your coach say "choke up on the bat". "Choking up" shortened your bat and gave you better control it seems the same thing is true in a rod. If you are going to use one rod for everything I'd suggest a 6'6.

Posts: 78 Location: Pardeeville, WI | I agree the 6'9" St. Croix is an awesome Jerkbait rod. I probably wouldnt go shorter than that unless you fish out of a bass boat and are not very tall.

Posts: 47 Location: The Land of Lincoln | Thanks everyone for the responses! I really appreciate the extra info too! But like I said, I've settled on one of two jerkbait rods - both short and stout so if you guys could limit your comments to the 6foot st croix premier and the 6'3" allstar big game, I'd be grateful. If I start looking at all the lengths, too, I'll never be able to pick a rod (if only I could buy 2 or 3 rods). mclarkin77

Posts: 32959 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Since the choice has been narrowed to two models, I would suggest you hold each in you hand with your reel on the rod, and buy the one that feels best to you.
