Anyone using and recommend this unit. Do bird transducers always send a roostertail up the transom of the boat most I have seen seem to. What is the internal mapping like? I'm guessing my navionics chips will work.
I was going to purchase a HDS7 and LSS2 but was offered the bird for almost half the price. I have always used Lowrance and have been reasonably happy. I realise this is last years model but when I phoned Hummingbird they said they support discontinued models for at least 7 years.

I like mine.. Yes it seems to always have the rooster tail coming off mine..
I have a Navionics in my 998, and lakemaster in my 858. So whatever one you like will likely work..
I always used lowrance until last year.. Got the 858 originally so I could use I-pilot link, and liked the unit enough that I bought the 998 about mid season..

More than happy with my 998c SI . Use both Navionics and Lakemaster. I do not have an issue with rooster tail as I have the transducer set higher .

Is it a single transducer or one for the side downscan and one for the sonar . If anyone had a picture of the mounted transducer I would appreciate seeing it. I will have to decide soon as there is only 5 days left on the tax free sale.

They should come with a rubber plug to fit in the opening between ducer and bracket to help with rooster tail. You can also mount the si ducer higher and mount a second high speed ducer for reading 2d at high speed.

My last boat would create the rooster tail. This is caused by water going through the open area just above the transducer. Just wrap some tape around there to close it off and problem is solved. It's not happening on my MX1825 though.

According to a Seminar held by Humminbird I attended If rigged properly it should not create a rooster tail The SI Transducer should sit out of the water when the boat is on plane at high speeds. I think many dealers did not get this concept when SI first came out. I had the benfit of Joe Carlson and Frankies Marine rigging my last two boats so they knew what the deal was but I have plenty of freinds who get the rooster tail beacuse the ducer is at the same level as the hgih speed 2D transducer.

It can use 2 ducers. it comes with one that will do it all, but that is not always the best way to rig it. Lots of people buy the y cable and a high speed ducer also so that it is has 2 ducers. One for SI/DI which reads best at trolling speeds and the other standard ducer for high speed reading.

I had the same problem. I raised the 'ducer up a bit and it went away.

Horse hunter-if you have specific questions give Humminbird customer service a call 800-633-1468. I recently purchased a 999 unit, I like yourself had a bunch of questions as to what I needed and which units connect with other units and so forth-the rep I spoke with was fantastic.
