Sorry guys but I'm on the trolling kick this winter . I've just started trolling and I have a lot to learn yet. Thanks to some good of the souls on this Board I've been able to learn alot about Trolling.

But there's alot I still need to learn such as dive curves for a good number of musky baits that are out there. Is there any literature that has some dive curve charts of musky baits? I've seen charts for the walleye/salmon/trout baits, but none for the big baits. If there isn't literature out there. What are some of the ways to acquire data to compile a chart? Would any of you guys be willing to share some legit information for a nominal fee?

catch ya later,
Krappie

The only web site that I've seen with a dive chart is the one for Tuff-Shads. One of my friends just experiments with different lures over a known depth. He measures how much line to let out until the lure hits bottom at 6', 10', 12', etc.

A book on baits was written called "The Trolling Bible". It's my understanding that there is some info on big baits but it is limited. Their site is at http://www.precisionangling.com/

Mark Romanack is working on that now. He has the crankbait books the Walleye guys live by, and will be doing lots of tests very soon. He bought $300 in cranks at the shows last week for the tests. he has the website the last post mentions. Watch for it!!

I think the best thing to do is to play around and see what run's where.
Line dia., speed (boat and water current) and lure to lure all need to be taken into consideration.

I have thaught about this very same question in the past, and I never got around too it earlier, but I was thinking: Would people be interested if we all kind of worked together to come up with dive charts for a variety of lures that we all commonly use? My idea was that for those of you that do record the depths your lures are running at, according to the diameter, and length of line out, we could turn those into a big file, such as a spreedsheet or something so that information could be available to everyone. I think I could maybe swing putting all the info together in my spare time, it would take a while, but it would be a great resource for people to be able to use. Just a thaught...let me know what you think?

Nate, that's a great idea. This could turn into a great resource for the users of this board. I can't give you exact numbers yet because I just got some line counters this winter, but I would be willing to post some data as it becomes available. We should keep this post alive all summer and add data as it becomes available. A collective effort would save time and benefit us all.

Keep your hooks sharp.

I think that figuring out where your baits are running is part of the game! There are many variables that determine how deep a bait runs (line size, boat speed, type of leader, hooks that have been changed, how true the bait is running, etc.) and to be successful you need to take the time and figure it out on your own. Depth charts may help you get in the ball park, but they are seldom "bulls eye" accurate.

Nate;

Email me at [email protected]. We are in process populating a resource that would work for what you have suggested!
