Don't be confused by the title, I am in no way a rich guy. However, I know that it is fun to help others spend their money.

I am looking to buy a St. Croix Rod for smaller bucktails, and maybe some other miscellaneous baits. I want to put a Curado 300 EJ on the rod (power handle and higher gear ratio) but am stuck on the rod to go with.

For my purposes, would I be better off with a Long Ranger (8'6" MH) or a Sling Blade (8'6" H)?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Well since you asked, call Thornes and have them build you a heavy Predator and extend it to 9'6"

Thorne Predators are a heck of a rod, but for this I am looking to stick to the two options.

From the two you mentioned .....

Long Ranger

I love mine! It will throw double tens but is more of a small crank or small buck tail rod. It casts a mile. I have mine set up with an Abu Garcia Winch. It's my go to rod when we fish a certain small body of water when we bring out the 10' aluminum and minimum baits, only other rod I bring is a LT The Jerk for gliders and regular Bulldawgs.

I would say it depends on the lures you will throw most. I have a Slingblade and really like it. Handles many baits well. I don't have a Long Ranger, but do have a Top n Tail which is somewhat like a Long Ranger, a bit softer and shorter, tho they have the same ratings. The Top n Tail is great as well, but for larger tails the Slingblade is better suited. If you like a lighter rod, and you say your looking to throw smaller tails then maybe the Long Ranger is for you.

Okay, it may help to know the other rods I have to help fill the gap.

9' XH Thorne Predator/tranx hg- big bucktails
9' TI XXH/ daiwa saltist- big rubber
8'6" XH/ calcutta 400B-ripping big cranks and mag dogs
8' H/ revo toro 60 hs-when it feels "right"
8'MH/ curado 300E "Top and Tail"- gliders and top water baits

I love my top and tail, but when it comes to 8's, the rod is a little short when fishing from a boat that has a high deck and being a tall guy.

Get a hold of Tuscarora Tackle. He can build you one heck of a rod on a SC blank. He has any option available you can dream of and his prices are very good.

Check his rods out:

Jeremy does a lot of good things for others too so your money is going to a good place that will help others. Great guy and very talented.

Now that I see you have a Top N Tail already, I would go with the Slingbalde for sure!

What do you consider to be a smaller bucktail and other misc. baits?

You can throw a dbl10 on the top n tail, but the rod is already loaded, so it is really best suited for dbl8's or smaller. I would say it performs best with single blades.

This would be a rod for double 8's and single blades of a similar size. I am just wondering if a sling blade may be too stiff for the application.

Slingblade does fine with dbl 8's and actually casts lighter baits better than I thought it would, however I guess it really depends how small you want to go. I assume since you have a Top n Tail you would use that on your small stuff

I've never used a Sling Blade but again as I mentioned above I have the Long Ranger and use it for small cranks, double 8's and even throw double 10's with it. Double 10's are definitely maxing out the capabilities of the rod and if you were going to throw double 10's ALL day then another rod would be better suited (this is where I am waiting for my custom H Avid to come back).

Looks like you have enough rods. Buy some more time to fish by treating the ol lady to dinner at hong kong buffet and a room at the no-tell motel some weekend soon.

Given you're looking at a Curado, the Long Ranger would probably be the better match. Slingblade if you were looking at a Tranx PG.

Considering the 400D?

I think you might be correct with the pairing of the Curado and Long Ranger. My thought is that the Curado might not balance nicely on the Sling Blade.

Since I am looking to throw light baits that don't pull much, I think that a Tranx PG is overkill and might not even cast that well with the lighter baits.

As for the 400D's, I want something with a higher gear ratio that can speed up easier when I have a hot follow.

So that is where the 300D comes in! That is what I have on my Slingblade. Quicker than the 400, though not as quick as the Curado.

Matt,

I just got a sling blade with the deal from the team, and looking at your other rods, I think the sling blade is the best choice. As far as reels, I'm pairing mine with the NaCl 60 5:4:1. Easy to grip and works great with smaller and bigger buck tails!
