Posts: 397 | I am looking at going up from 8-15AUG this year. I went last year for the first time the last week of june with operation muskie and another guy and i have been hopelessly now addicted to lotw!! The fishing was great compared to what i am used to. I wanted to go mid or late july but cant get into the resort i wanted. Would a person be better off going in july or is the mid august time frame fine? I know the bloom can make it tough fishing that time of year

Posts: 42 | That is the week I am going to lotw. Week of the full moon. I go every year in August and do well. There are lots of places to fish and get out of the bloom, it has never been an issue for me.

Posts: 581 | Mid/late July is probably the best (as in most consistent) timeframe for numbers of fish. But any given summer week can be better than another based on prevailing weather conditions. There is typically some bloom once you get into August, but even at it's worse, wind and current will move it around and you can find clean water without too much trouble.

Posts: 52 | Most years I don't think it matters we have seen some impressive catches during both months. A lot depends on weather and water temperature. We still have a few openings in July, but not many, if you are interested. All the best in 2014; Todd Edited by Tamarack 1/1/2014 6:36 PM

Posts: 300 Location: Minocqua, WI | I've been fishing the early to middle August time-frame these last two summers. It's treated Musky Brian and I very well. Adapt to the conditions before you, and don't be afraid to make some long runs and explore a bit!

Location: MN | So to avoid starting another LOTW thread I will ask this here. How is the fishing in June? My old man is trying to put together a trip with me (he's not a musky guy) and I am trying to talk him into doing a multi-species trip so we can fish skis and June is the only time that works with his schedule. I am sure it depends on Spring and spawn timing but in general how is the month of June? Thanks

Posts: 581 | Keep in mind that the muskie opener on LOTW isn't until the 3rd Saturday in June. With that said, it can be pretty hit and miss, depending upon prevailing weather. By late June and into early July, action would typically start becoming more and more consistent. I've found that early season trips generally can be great for seeing fish, but not as great for actually catching fish. Certainly not saying that you can't have a good week, and especially if it's your only timeframe to go, I wouldn't turn it down.

Posts: 906 Location: Warroad, Mn | It'll depend on what the weather does. Usually there are still smalies available in large numbers on muskie opener. This year the muskie opener is the latest it can be (third Saturday in June). The way the winter has been I don't expect a real early ice out, but you never know at the end of January. Walleyes in late June are usually pretty easy to catch. Muskie season opens June 21st this year, I would guess that there would still be smallies available. There are muskies available also, sometimes it's great, and sometime it sucks. Doug Johnson

Thanks take a scroll through the pictures from the Operation Musky trip the last few years and it will give you an idea of what you can expect. At least the past few years, fish have gotten active in June but mostly smaller fish in the 30-44" range. I have been up over that timeframe over the past few years and things didn't really get cooking for both size and numbers until the first 4-5 days of July...but it's still LOTW and anything is possible, big fish can be caught in that time frame

Posts: 2062 | opener - through end of June has always treated me well. Its often a weed bite, "sand cups" near spawning bays can be excellent, with an early ice-out some fish will already be moving to rocks by opener..its a time of year fish are on the move...i like that, a good spot might not have much on it day 1, day 2 it may have a couple of really nice fish on it,..but as Doug mentioned weather plays a big role. There can be some very very large fish hanging near the spawning bays around opener, and they will eat.

Posts: 397 | I was at operation muskie last year the last week of june and saw more muskies in 4 days than i do all year. There was one 50 caught and like said a lot in the 36-44 inch range with two 47's as well.

There can be some very very large fish hanging near the spawning bays around opener, and they will eat. I'll second both of these posts with my experiences. For whatever reason we seem to contact smaller fish on average early in the season. Weedy bays or "sand cups" can really hold fish when the water is warming up early in the year. Late morning/early afternoon on a warm sunny day and little bay the size of a swimming pool can hold multiple nice fish. Seems like later July and August we find mostly small fish in those same spots and not as many. On any trip, the weather before and while you are there is going to be the deciding factor on your success. You need to fish accordingly.
