Posts: 51 | Only person I've ever fished with out of Playa is Captain Edy Pena. He has a panga that you can troll or bottom fish out of. I've been out twice with him and caught triggerfish, snapper, AJ's, dolphin, bluefish, and a few others. Both trips were great, one trip we even went handlining for bottom fish, caught over 150 triggerfish/blue's between 3 people in 3 hours... that was fun! You meet him right on the beach in Playa by the lighthouse. I've heard good things about Captain Salas as well, but never fished with him. You looking to do more offshore or nearshore stuff?

The flats/mangrove fishing on cozumel is fun, bonefish, baby tarpon, and barracuda. You will certainly have action. Bill fish is a bit early this time of year, but you never know. The offshore is hit or miss. We troll between dives out there and have done well, but typically a bit later in the spring. BR

Posts: 999 | I went last year around the begining of February on a charter out of El Cid which is up more towards Cancun. Didnt do very well trolling but we did get some Trigger fish jiggin on a reef. Price was right though at $100 a guy and they provided a awesome box lunch and two cases of Coronas.

Posts: 51 | If you are staying right by the beach in Playa Del Carmen, you can just walk down in the morning and there are usually a decent amount of boats out there without pre-booked trips. If you are staying at a hotel a little ways away from Playa, it may be a bit more difficult unless you go into town to shop or eat. But if he is booked up, I would look around and see who has the best gear, those are usually the better guides since they can afford better gear, from my experience of course. If you don't hear back from him... You can also walk down and ask for Captain Edy, everyone down there knows who he is and will point you in the right direction. He used to park his boat right in front of the lighthouse... that was about 2-3 years ago, but guessing it hasn't changed much. Good Luck!

Make sure you check out the blue parrot fire show, typically around 10pm each night, super fun time.

Posts: 258 Location: Mayville, WI | Rather than start my own thread, I'll jump in here since there's a good discussion going. Any recommendations for the Bahamas (Eleuthera / Spanish Wells) in mid february? Not looking to get out in a boat (luckily I know someone who winters there & can hop in with them) but from shore or kayak when I'm not on their boat. Mainly looking for baits to bring in a small box &/or what species to expect. I'll be bringing an inshore spinning setup with me

Location: Hartford Wi | I am just taking shinny cast-masters and a few small bucktails! I don't know. When i was in the Bahamas i saw lots of fish from shore but they chased my bait but didn't eat it....

Posts: 17 | Fishing down in the Playa area is fun. The wife and I went out a few years ago and trolled. She ended up getting a 55" Wahoo....was awesome to see her fight the beast. I would recommend it to anyone going to Mexico for a trip. I ended up helping out the deck hand rigging all the rods. Was fun to learn and see how they fish down there.

Posts: 283 | My wife and I went on for our anniversary in July 2012. In the first 5 minutes we saw a marlin swim by the boat and I was pumped. An hour later we hooked up with a sailfish. It was a good half hour fight or so. 2 hours later my wife hooked into a Bonita. With 5 minutes left we almost hooked another sailfish. I'm glad we did it but it wasn't my cup of tea as I'm a caster, I would consider doing a casting charter for tarpon or similar fish but not deep sea again.

Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Hey Mike: Use same jigs as you would for laker's on Cliff - 4-6 inch. Tip the jig with a squid tail for extra attraction. You should be able find plastic squid teasers in local bait shop...I like 6-8 teasers... All saltwater predators eat squid's, unless they run into the giant squid! LOL. Topwater muskie bait's w/ hooks switched to saltwater will simulate feeding surface bait fish or escaping baitfish. Hang on! !!! A 40" barracuda or cobia will eat same size lures as 40" muskie. But, there is bigger stuff in the ocean! A 40" cobia is a fight! Have a great trip- see you at Milw Muskie show! Have fun! Al

Posts: 243 | Yes, as mentioned, should be able to get in front of barracuda and cobia without too much trouble. I went low budget and split a boat with a Canadian at the resort. Unfortunately, he drank a bottle of Beam the night before and was green---have never seen another person that color for an extended period of time---the entire trip. He did more involuntary chumming over the side than fishing. I caught several barracudas using some of the worst equipment you could imagine and I'm not sure if my boat captain had ever been fishing before. He did seem to enjoy a spiked punch mix that he had in a jar below the wheel. More of a cruisin' captain. Find some guys who are rigged up and know their stuff and I bet you'd really tear them up. Or bring your own and take a kayak or paddleboat out in front of the resort and you'll get on some fish.

Heading to Riviera Maya in March, looking into a couple of charters. Anyone ever ship their catch back to the US if you catch something worthwhile? Thinking of calling the resort to find out what my options might be as most charters said they only filet the catch, not pack/ship anywhere. I don't think I could bring anything on a place with me as dry ice is not allowed if I remember correctly.

Posts: 349 | I'm surprised no one mentioned Roberto Navarro. He speed jigs out a panga in the channel between PDC and Cozumel. Speed jigging is really cool, it's like working a glide bait at high speed but vertical instead of horizontal. He has really nice gear to rent and told me that I could bring my Tranx, but it might be a little underpowered. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUQvRp5Spxk He has a lot more cool videos if you search Youtube and you can contact him through email to set up your dates. Agreed going for a boat ride and reeling in fish, if your lucky (usually on old junk rods and reels) is not all that exciting...Many charters in Mexico are not very good fisherman IMO - "One trick Pony's" - drive around doing the same thing every day, lucky for them something will usually bite (the ocean is amazing)... most don't even have good casting gear and they don't adapt well if the bite is "off" NOW, good captains with top gear are hard to find AND you pay top dollar for them, but its worth it - IMO! And most love to let you cast! Good captain's will tease up fish for you (no hooks) stop the boat and you cast to fired up fish! Its also the best technique many times if you spot a billfish or find baitballs! If you want to catch big blue water fish casting its totally doable, but again most aren't setup to do it.....Casting to bill-fish is more of an adrenaline rush than muskie fishing! A lot like muskie fishing actually only your watching a 150Lb+ fish stalk your lure or fly in crystal clear water! As muskie fisherman many of us are gonna want to cast, talk details and look at your captains equipment before you book....Just some thoughts. Edited by IAJustin 2/14/2014 11:56 PM
