This is kind of a dumb question or more of an embarrasing one. Last fall when putting my boat away, I turned the spark plug in wrong and stripped the threads. The motor is a 1985 15 hp. Short of bringing it to the shop is there anyway of fixing this? Could a guy tap the threads himself, or would the filings get in the motor? Thanks for any info.

This issue is not too hard to fix.

It will involve pulling off the head, and a replacement of the head gasket. By pulling the head off, you will not get any filings in the cylinder, plus, if you stripped the threads, there might be some in there already that need to be removed. The other nice thing, is by taking the head off, you can inspect the cylinders really well, and by replacing and retourquing the head, you should get better compression than where you are at now.
What you will need to do is get a heli-coil(spelling?) installed. It will have to be done at a shop (unless you have the tooling to do so), but once it is in, the head will be just fine. It involves making a bigger hole for the coil to thread into, then it has a hole in it that is threaded to match your spark plug.

You could also call to Twin City Outboard in Shakopee, MN. They would have the part (used) and the gasket (new). Price is pretty decent too. I think they ship all over the U.S. I think they have a website too, but am not sure. http://www.twincityoutboard.com

Thanks VMS for the info, I think I will take the head to the shop like you said and get it fixed right. Thanks again for the info.
