Posts: 7079 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Thinking of getting a few new 6-8" crankbaits specifically for trolling behind boards. Looking for something that runs 7-10" without a ton of line out (more than 60') that also isn't going to be such a deep runner that it's 10' behind the board either. AND, I'm set on Depthraiders. Ideas?

Posts: 2062 | not a huge troller but when I do I almost always run boards...and its really hard to beat a 10" jointed believer behind a board for me! You should be right in that 7-10' range with 50' of line behind the board on the deep eye.

big cisco kids, you can bend the metal lip to adjust wobble and depth. Awesome for trolling and largely overlooked. BR

Posts: 906 Location: Canada | You could try the lures I've been using a lot of the last couple of years. They are hand picked red cedar, through wire, handmade and painted with a polished aluminum lip. It's a 9" lure and comes in jointed and now in a straight also. Click on the Lawrence Lures link at the bottom of my post.

Posts: 35 | Slammers 7" minnow is a great trolling bait. It trolls over 5mph and doesnt run deep either. 60' of line out will only get down around 5'. Lots of guys use his deep divers on a short line behind boards with great success. A very popular tactic in green bay.

Posts: 157 Location: Lincoln, NE | I love the Custom X mini 8 for casting but haven't trolled it yet. But I bought a Chubby 8 for trolling. Haven't used it yet cause it's winter but the quality is amazing and I love how the 12" trolls. A bunch of people did good on them this year trolling around LSC area and GB I think. I also love how my 10" Swimming Joe trolls. I don't know if they make an 8" but since it's a swimbait with a crankbait lip it's a little different than a lot of regular crankbaits that people troll. Has some nice action. And even the 10" seems smaller than it really is.

The reason I ask is that there certainly seems to be preference from lake to lake. Sure any lure may work at a given time but day in and day out fish really show a preference. So in generalities here are some based on water clarity: Stained to dirty (these should plow and not wander): Les Chubby (many other simlar out there now), 6" Ernie, 6" Believer (shallow setting), Loke jtd, Super Shad Rap, Shallow Invader, Hoginator Clear to Gin (these should wander): 6" Grandma Deep Diver, Fishall Slasher, Loke straight, Grandma 9", Swim Whizz

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Hook up with Bill at Slammer Tackle. His baits are fish catching, long lasting, quality baits. That 4-inch rattle bait was outstanding for me last year. Ernie' s, Bagley's, Diesel's and Tuff shads were also very productive doing what your looking to do. The shorter the line length off the boards the better the action on the lures. I used to long line off boards until I figured out that the shortest lines caught the most fish. Pressured lakes produce more fish off short lines than long lines. I know its hard to believe for most people but its true. I don't run boards much anymore because the weeds and other guys trolling just make it more of a hassle than it worth. Boards only catch a small fraction of my fish when I run them. My shortest line catches more fish than any other rod in my 6 rod set (Two board rods, two up rods and two down rods). Run your shortest down rod on the kicker side just under and behind the prop wash. Rip-rip-rip......
