Anyone have input on these reels for double tens? I am a lefty. A friend picked up a few at a good price and offered me one. Not to sure about it, considering i read up the the avet sx not being smooth after a year. Id be saving over half the price of a revo toro nacl.

Thanks guys

The reel in question is not designed specifically for duece tens but with patience and proper set up it is a awesome reel for this purpose. I found that the line flows better if positioned vertically on the cast. The MC and the drag each is set on the #3 position for the size blades I cast. I had a Thornes competitor custom made for the Avet. Lonnie moved the first line guide 5" closer to the reel seat and enlarged it to the next biggest size. He also beefed up the seat to a salt water model that gripped the reel sturdier than production model ones could. The result is casting distance is above average, over-spooling is minimal at best when it's dial in. It's a dream to use when the set up is customized as used as it's purposed. I have a 8-6" blank measured for me in my boat to comfortably conduct a figure 8 at the end of my cast. The 5.8:1 retrieve ratio brings in 36" of line per revolution, pretty nice as a lefty option.
I have a calcutta 401te, a Abu revo toro 61 but my Avet is the reel I perfer to use when I use bigger blades. The reel is very smooth but considered louder than the normal right handed options. But I factor in the work it is doing and don't consider it an issue for the assignment of work. Fishing partners always make more noise than my reel. It took patience and critical observation to get this reel to do what I wanted, but it paid off for me.

I vote no!
Mine is running rough after a year.
U wanna buy mine for a hundred. You can call them and get the gear or bearing replaced that is rough I am sure:)
It cranks the tens in like they r not there.

I am actually waiting on the release of the sxj raptor which should be on the market by the end of the month. The raptor is beefed up more than the standard sxj. I actually use a JX for rubber and big blades and love it. The first couple of times that I threw it I did not think the blades were working they came in so easy. I use the two speed version. You can really burn the blades in high gear. If you look on their website it is basically the same line pick up as both tranx models but for the cost of only 1 reel. If you have a problem with them the factory rebuilds them for $35.00.

I use the Raptor SX and really love it, would have wished the SXJ where out in a raptor edition when i bought it.
But the SX is small enough and also works great for jigging, both fresh and salt water.

the 5.8:1 is the MX, the SXJ single speed is 5.3:1

also the SXJ has a smaller reel foot to fit standard reel seats.

does anybody have any feedback on the SXJ specifically?

Its the same as the sx just a narrower frame. Apparently better for casting.

Last I asked them, they said they won't be available until November.

The Avet SXJ MC has been available for a long time. What is not yet available is the SXJ raptor series. This is a beefed up 2-speed version with many improvements over the MC, but at over twice the cost. An awesome looking reel, imo, but pricey at almost $400. That said, I do have the SX raptor and think it ROCKS!

what do you use the SX raptor to throw? i see it picks up 39 inches per turn, thats pretty high. can u use it for double 10s comfortably?

do you use both the low and high gearing?

Very comfortably! I use the high speed much more than the low -- it's the reason I got it as I needed a comfortable HS reel for big blades. For the 13's and the big cranks, I like the low speed. However, the biggest reason I got the raptor over the mc or 2-speed mc is the greater drag capacity, the auto stop on the drag, and the smoother feel (much less of a "coffee grinder" feel than the regular mc).

do you have to thumb the line to get it even on the spool during the retrieve? or can you just reel in normally like a levelwind reel?

You should not have to thumb the line to get it even on the spool. I have four Avet MXL 5.8 MCs. I like Captain Bigfish's response with using a custom rod for the reel. That is very good advice. You may occassionally get some line pile to one side or the other, but that is not a big deal. The Raptor has a better drag and should be more durable. In terms of the louder sound that has to do with the bearings. The pinion bearing is 5.00 and takes about 5 minutes to switch out. I like my Avets, but the number one thing is that I am absolutely addicted to the lever drag for figure 8s and fighting a fish, so much so that one of my four Avets is a righty in case I get fatigued on a long day of burning bucktails lefty I can switch. The lever drag is why I chose the righty Avet over a righty Tranx.
