Living in North Alabama, I have a three hour drive north to the nearest muskie hole. I have the muskie fever so it is killing me. I lost a muskie on my first outing from the kayak and now have completely removed all thoughts of bass out of my head. I am also a tackle junky so I have already purchased $$$ of lures from MTO and MS.

Just wanted to let you guys know I enjoy reading all of the posts and learning from this message board. This is the best forum for muskies on the internet. Maybe soon, I will post up my first catch.

Maybe you should have been here last week when it was -30 degrees or yesterday when we got ten inches of snow. It is not all peaches and cream here.

I will admit that the fishing here is Pretty sweet. That being said. we had a week where it was hovering around -20 degrees for a temp and one day was down to -55 for a wind chill. that is cold bro!!!

You can drive 3 hours to the nearest musky hole, I have to wait at least 4 months before my lakes are even unfrozen. (granted I ice fish all year when I can) but still. For now, I may be jealous of you... you can be jealous of us in 4 months. But right now... live the dream bro! Stay warm and fish hard

guess you guys are right. We freak out when it gets into the 10s. I also have the beach close by and I get frequent trips there as well. But right now, I can't get the muskie off my mind. We haven't had snow stick in a couple of years. Just the occasional flurries.

CT, I hear ya. I am 6 hours from the nearest musky waters. Bass are still fun, but not the same. My friends ask me what a musky is, but have no clue about how crazy I have become. Until they come over and see the lures and tackle.

Not only muskies, the bass fishing is off the charts.
Smallies and largemouth are a lot easier to catch, than down south.
They are beautifully colored, and are as fat as footballs!!!
You may not get the pigs, but all the 2-4 pounders, you can handle.
I fish in Florida, from November through April. It sucks, compared to northern Minnesota.

CT, I'm one of those northerners you talk about, living in NW Wisconsin. Yeah, it gets cold here. We get snow. It isn't always fun plowing the driveway after work when it's dark out.

I wouldn't trade it and move south for anything. I'd miss the changing seasons, the 5-10 minute drive I have to musky waters, the bowhunting (with 200+ pound bucks, not the pencil necked texas deer), the icefishing, and even the blasts of bitter cold we get now and then.

I'm sure if I lived in the south I'd find plenty to keep me busy, but I like living in the north. We might brag about our cold weather, but I'd have a hard time getting used to brutally hot summers too. I feel lucky to live where I do.

we got Spotted and Largemouth Bass and those mean little redeye bass. Smallmouth is an hour north. Musky 3 hours north. Sharks, reds, and speckeled trout are at the beach about 5 hours south.

We also got some good college football. Im an Auburn grad.

There anything that'll chase the muskie lures down there? With how cold this winter is looking, we'll be lucky if the lakes are open by late April. I love seasons, I just wish MN skipped the $#!TTY ones....

curleytail is spot on. Yep, it gets cold...big flippin deal. I'd rather have days when it is -20 below or more and still have the summers we have than live in a climate where your eyeballs sweat on mild days. I spent two years in Florida for graduate school and that was more than enough. No change of season, summers were unbearable, and that whole boiled peanut thing was weird.

I'll gladly put up with a month straight of temps between -15 and -30 knowing that I'll have at least one week a few months later where it's perfect weather for shorts and a sweatshirt.

I have to tell 'ya... I hate the cold. But there's NOTHING worse than when it gets up to that 85 - 95 range and you're sweating through your clothes just sitting there. Yah, sure, it gets hot up North, too. But at least it cools down at night.

One thing I could definitely do without is the black flies, horse flies, and clouds of mosquitoes that are so thick it almost looks like it's snowing.

I'm hoping to be able to start snowbirding it in 5-10 years! I miss the summer and fall up in Northern MN, not so much the winters. My job is too good to move completely, but luckily it's very flexible.

Funny I have often said that if not for musky fishing I would move somewhere like Denver. But having a half dozen good musky waters within an hour and Green Bay boat landings five minutes from work doesn't suck. Drive a bit more and 100s of awesome lakes to choose from.... Sometimes we forget how lucky we are.

We have:
-50 temps
occasional non-existant seasons (we went from winter straight to summer, summer straight to winter last year)
spearing
no trolling
an apparently recessed economy
wolves preying on deer without check
sasquatch preying on us without check
mines
mercury in our lakes
too many bass
too many tourists

I wouldn't live anywhere else.

CT, I love living here in NW Pa. an abundance of musky waters, some of the very best musky lure makers live here. Pike, Perch, Smallmouth on Lake Erie is IMO is the best in the state. We are relatively close to the St. Lawrence, Niagara and Ottawa rivers. LSC. not all that far either. I love living remote and this fits me and my family well here. We do get a lot of snow and cold weather though.
