Lots of discussion around rod/reel setups for burning double 10's.  What setup do you use to reel them slow at night?   Same rod/reel or a different set-up?

I don't have a fast setup yet but am looking into one. With that said, I think I would want something different than a hotrod reel for slow rolling them. When moving them slow, just about anything will bring them in without much difficulty, and I think it would be a painfully slow pace to try to slow roll them with a reel that picks up 35"+ per crank.

That's just my feeling. I'd say any suitable rod (long enough with a softer tip) and any standard speed reel should work just fine.

I dont think anyone burns them in ALL the time. Just have reels that can with out killing you and do everything else fine with slowing down the pace a little.

I don't really fish at night, but if i wan't to fish really slow , i like my ABU 7000i, or my 2 speed Avet SX in "low gear".

I switch set ups as using a tranx at night can be done but you have to reel painfully slow, it's easier to me to switch to a Revo Toro Winch w Calcutta power handle and I also like using a sling blade at night as the tip is a little softer, daytime when I'm burning w the tranx I prefer a stiffer tip...

i'd venture to guess in my boat at night we have at least 150 or more fish over the last 6 or 7 yrs... only 3 or 4 on 13s... just some data for the above post...

I switch setups from a TE w/power handle or my Saltist to a Revo Winch. The Winch brings them in great and with the gearing & speed you are coming in at you can get real dialed in as far as whats going on with the bait,,ie. ticking weeds, feel swing & miss, etc.. I also use this reel for topwater at night as well due to the gearing it is a forced way of going slower.

Out of curiosity, how often do you throw 13's? Not being a smart @$$, just curious. Wondering about the usefulness of the double 13, or if it's one of those bucktails that guys with Tranx PG's throw to make everyone else jealous

no it's a good question/point... true we don't have 13s in the water as much as 10s..but it's hard to argue w the success by 100s, if not 1000s of anglers that do very well on 10s at nite... I do know some buds of mine who have some 50+ at nite on 13s... I have done better w 12s at nite vs 13s but again it could just be time in the water.. throw what you have confidence in but mix it up, sometimes the 13s are the ticket, heck sometimes at nite 8s could work just as well...fish don't care that it's dark as much as we do, forget it's dark out and figure out what they want that minute/hour/night...

I have a 400b, thinking it would be slow enough. I have a hard time reeling slow.
